i'm really confused by all this kilo bit, kilo byte stuff. can somone expalin this please

i know that 8 bits = 1 byte and 1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte (or is it kilobits ?) 1000 kb = 1 Mb(megabits ?)

how do you determine a 2Mbps connection into kbps format.. ie:: when i download using IE6 it says 230 Kbps.

my friend was trying to figure it out and came up with 125 Kbps = 1 megabit/ps

if that is true then my cable connection will be 250 kbps... will i be able to download at speeds of 400kbps like i do right now with my satellite using download accelerator?? :unsure:

in computer terms 1kilobyte = 1024bytes.

1megabyte = 1024kilobytes.

to get "bits" number just multiply above numbers by 8.

IE6 shows download speed in "KILOBYTES PER SECOND".

so 230 KILOBYTES PER SECOND is equal to ~1840 KILOBITS PER SECOND, which is about 2megabit connection.

if that is true then my cable connection will be 250 kbps... will i be able to download at speeds of 400kbps like i do right now with my satellite using download accelerator??

that doesn't make any sense.

if you will be downloading at 250 KILOBYTES PER SECOND, then you prolly have 2megabit cable connection.

on satellite you are downloading at 400KILOBITS PER SECOND, or 50 KILOBYTES PER SECOND, which is normal speed for satellite connection.

right now im on a satellite connection and i use download accelerator as my default download manager. when i download files, my download speed is around 400 - 600 KB/Sec.

!!*traveling into the future (about a week) cable is already installed.. no more satellite*!! :D

the cable is advertised at 2Mbps.. so if i were downloading a file just like i did when i had the satellite, will i still be able to reach speeds of 400 - 600 KB/Sec. ??

lets' see if i can answer my own question... i don't know about the satellite becuase its a piece of crap. except for the download speed.. anyway.. with my new 2mbps cable. i know that it will be better than the satellite cuz of the upload speed and the latency. and especially the unlimited bandwidth usage. so now i think that it basically means when i download a file the most can ever get up to is about 230 KB/Sec.

"KB/Sec." is what download accel. shows when i'm downloading a file. is there a difference between Kbps and KBps?

it's really not that confusing... you just gotta notice the capitalization of the B in Bits/Bytes area... MegaBYTES is MB (big B) and Megabits is Mb (small b) so if you notice you're downloading @ 600Kbps (Kilobits per second) then devide it be 8 to get the actual Kilobytes which is how computers store info... so if the file was 10MB then downloading at 400Kbps would take longer than 25seconds ;)

In telecommunications and internet, data is measured in decimal terms i.e. 1000 Kilobits = 1 Megabit.

So 2 Megabits = 2000 Kilobits (as Mxxcon mentioned). Seeing as there's 8 bits to a byte, you can divide through by 8 to get your theoretical maximum. In your case this will be 250 Kilobytes/sec (decimal). Download accelerator will not get your speed above this because when cable is speed capped it just doesn't go over the theoretical maximum.

Depends on the program you use to show the download speed, IE shows KiloBytes, and for other download managers you can choose within the preferences whether to show the speeds in KilyBytes or Kilobits.

wow.. so i ****** up.. big deal.. i myself got confused with all the blabber about bits and bytes in the thread already.. of course i know 1KB=1,024Bytes and its derivatives.. i also know 8bits=1byte, therefore your explanation makes sense..

the only way to see inaccurate speeds (more than ur maximum bandwidth) is when compression is enabled from the ISP's(many isp's use it in Europe). As far as i know that happens to dial up connections, i'm not sure if it can be supported and happen also to DSL or CABLE. When downloading a file, lets say 10mb it is compressed by the ISP (so lets say its size becomes 1mb), so u download it faster . Because ur IE or DA doesn't recognize that compression it thinks that u download a 10mb file but with faster speed(more than ur max bandwidth). But u are only downloading 1mb with ur maximum bandwidth. Then the file is decompressed from ur modem and it regains its actual size. That happens only in software, zips or document files, and not in photos or music. Users in Athens/Greece (where i'm from) have seen download speeds with 64k ISDN of 45-50 kb/sec (where the max speed is 7-8 kb/sec). But still i don't remember if it happens to cables and dsl's also.

both of you shut up! you both telling me two different things.

i finally got someone on the phone.. and explained it to me.

here it is. my cable connection get a maximum of 2megabits per second = about 250 kilobytes per second. compared to my satellite which gets around 600 kilobytes per second (maximum) = somewhere between 3 and 4 megabits per second...

so no i will not be able to download files at 600 kbps and yes i don't care about loosing 200 - 400 kbps. i would rather have an upload speed that is about 20 times faster than what mine is right now and a lower latency time.

right now adelphia is in a beta mode for their premium service which is 3 megabits per second or 500kilobytes per second... which runs for about $70

what i don't understand is.. why is a 600kilobyte ADSL cheaper by about $40. probably because cable is better than DSL.. :huh:

if what you are saying is true, then your satellite connection must be ~3mbit. this is the fastest satellite connection i ever heard of.

go to http://www.dslreports.com/stest run speed test and find out for sure what your connection is.

i'm assure you that will get at most 600kiloBITS/second, not 3megaBITS/second like you say you have.

oh... wait.. heh heh.. that is the maximum... take a look at the attached pic.. this is the fastest i have ever seen it go for a long period of time.. if i'm downloading file size 2 - 10 MB i'll get around 570 - 640 Kilobytes and the bigger the size the slower it gets.. on 130 MB files i usually average 120 kilobytes.

earthlink is my ISP.. damn it this has me confused all over agian.. i can't determine what they are using bits bytes. :crazy: ok.. i think i got it now.

MY SATELLITE DOWNLOADS AT A RATE OF 91 KILOBYTES PER SECOND (AS THE TEST SPEED RESULTS SHOW) SO IE6 AND ALL THOSE OTHER DOWNLOAD ACCELERATORS SHOW ME TRANSFER RATES IN KILOBITS PER SECOND. IN THE SPEED TEST I GOT 746 KILOBITS PER SECOND WHICH IS VERY FAST. IN THAT CASE IF I CAN REACH UP TO 2MEGABITS PER SECOND OR 250 KILOBYTES PER SECOND ON CABLE THEN IT COULD SHOW AS HIGH AS 900 KILOBITS PER SECOND TRANSFER RATE MAKING IT FASTER THAN MY SATELLITE (DOWNLOADING SPEED)

I have no idea what the hell i just said.. it sounds good and true and i hope it is. :D please don't get mad at me .. i'm a visual learner, i have to see it in action to completely understand it.. number and explanations can take me a very long time to understand.

i just want to play online :D and forget about ever having 16kb upload speed... internet browsing is worse than a 28k modem. only the downloads kick ass
