No, it's not a gadget, it's the button at the top of the sidebar. The "+" opens the gadgets window, so you can select another one, and the two arrows allow you to scroll the sidebar left and right....

Anyway, I found the answer. Drag the gadgets off the sidebar, then right-click on the "+" and select "Close". This closes the sidebar, but leaves the gadgets on the desktop.
