My two cents on the iPhone

Recommended Posts

What I was trying to get across is apple should either allow other phone manufacturers to use the iphone OS, or make different form factors of the iphone.

I was comparing how with other phone OSes I get a choice of devices with different form factors, with the iphone I'm limited to only what apple sees fit.

But I guess maybe that was too hard to get across...

well the Os on the iPhone is Apples so not they will not let other form factors use ther OS and Apple wanted to be different that is why they have no hardware based keyboard at all with the iPhone they wanted sleek and user friendly.

Ther is nothing wrong at all with the iPhone it is just you being so damn picky cause Apple seems to have hit the right spot with people that they have a product worth buying that they actually like. and agian the App store itself shows how damn people love the iPhone because it has 78+ 000 or more applications not and users of all types want to creat applications for it and it is the Easiest platform on the market to program for.

this is one reason why John carmack loves the iPhone over any other portable gaming platform cause it can do what they want it to and is easy to make games for and has alot of freedom while other phones and platforms are more restricted and take longer to make games for .

oh and a very good comparison of 2 phones is iPhone vs the new palm pre they both run the same hardware exactly the same under the hood yet the PP is far slower and far more limited in features

and agian the App store itself shows how damn people love the iPhone because it has 78+ 000 or more applications not and users of all types want to creat applications for it and it is the Easiest platform on the market to program for.

More like how people want to waste their money on utterly useless apps like

iSteam: http://www.tgdaily.com/html_tmp/content-view-40982-140.html

or ifart: http://digital.venturebeat.com/2008/12/23/...ly-10000-a-day/

Now out of the 78000apps how many of them are actually useful in someway compared to how many are just pieces of crap? And not just meant for idiots who can't find better things to spend their money on?

The majority of apps, people download, and like a day later delete it because they've gotten bored of it. Nice way to spend your money, and hell props to apple for making millions of it too.

--

But yet, these apps get approved and ones like Skyfire or Google VOIP which are actually useful get blocked.

you fail... the winmo and android community is very large. the iphone to me is nothing more than eye candy and the"in thing" that will die out.

I kid you not, for an entire two year period i said exactly the same thing. Very anti-iphone at one point. _very_...

Then i just woke up one day, quite literally and within 45 minutes of waking i had my iPhone back home and jailbroken. I've never regretted it for a day since. And for the record i gave up my htc diamond for it. (i had an Orbit 2 XDA before that) So my WinMo experience is actually bigger than my iPhone experience, yet iPhone still wins for me.

I won't say that it'll be my choice forever though. I remember a time where the only phone i would ever buy for over 5 years was Nokia.

Well Android, Web OS, and WinMo havn't been available for long.

The iPhone isn't the best because of it's hardware, but how well that hardware works inconjunction with the OS, applications and the internet.

I've owned phones with better cameras etc, but on the iphone within a couple taps I can have train departures, listen to my favorite online radio station, an app which shows when my favourite tv shows are on, and I can even watch live british TV on my iphone now.

The majority of the time i'm using my iphone isn't calling/texting/email, but using the fantastic applications for it.

HERE HERE! +1

and I can even watch live british TV on my iphone now.

hehe brilliant isn't it, Orange must love me hammering their 3g network.

I just hope when the iPhone comes officially over to Orange UK that the 3g network remains as good as it is now

And Apple would want to do that...why?

If you want different form factors, stick to Winmo or Andriod. You're not going to find it with an iPhone. I don't know why you keep insisting on this issue. You're not going to find it with the iPhone if those are the factors you care about. No one said the iPhone was for everyone.

It's like saying "I want a motorcycle with 4 wheels and a roof." Um, get a freaking car then.

I've used Winmo for years before the iPhone. XDA-Developers was basically my homepage. I would be constantly flashing the Rom, hacking..etc to get the phone just how I wanted it. Then the iPhone came out and it did nearly everything right out the box. All I had to do extra was take 10 minutes and jailbreak it. Rather than hacking the phone all the time, I'm actually using it.

Oh I am so sorry for expressing my opinion. I was just giving my two cents on why I didn't like a certain product, didn't know it had to conform to your quality standards, or to the way you saw things..

Iphone OS? The most boring OS ever...I don't want to use a strong word but I really hate it. Static and dumb...When I use the damn thing, I feel like I am supposed to be an idiot..

Maybe you are and that's the problem...

Anyways, if you don't like the "lack of choice" than you have the choice of not buying it. At least with the iPhone, they can guarantee how well the OS would run because well, they make the only phone with it.

Experience may vary across the several Blackberry, WinMo, and Android phones. OS and apps run differently across the several phones models that run the OS. Some have more ram, better processors, better storage, better cameras, different screen resolutions, etc. Nothing is really consistent.

Btw, you mention jailbreaking... Just look at how many hacked firmware there are of Android and WinMo. With WinMo, you almost have to use a custom ROM for the OS to function decently. Let me guess, you're going to reply with "at least I have a choice in custom ROMs..." Amirite or amrite?

Nope. To quote from my original post:

And the same people who complain that with "windows mobile you have to flash a custom ROM and it takes up time and I just want a phone to work" will just as happily go ahead and spend the time jailbreaking their iPhone to get it to look/run the way they want it. The exact same reason why people flash custom ROMs on windows mobile, or root their android devices."

I never said jailbreaking was a bad thing, sure it sucks that you have to do it (and the same applies to winmo/android) but I think its a step in the right direction.

seems using iphone too much had some adverse effects on your manners and some other important ...

who mentioned jailbreaking?

And is this the only clever answer you can conjure up?

Let me repeat to you...Iphone OS is boring and dumb...

lol, yeah I have to agree with you. I'm insanely bored with my iphone these days, recent phones out there have a much better UI and have multitasking now, the only thing keeping the iphone alive is its 80,000 appstore and 90% of those apps are useless/games. 8 out of the top 10 feature apps on the appstore are games, the ones that are not games are jamie oliver's 20 minute meals with a price tag of $7.99, WTF is that? apple needs multitasking and a big UI change for the next iphone if they want to stay in the game because android's appstore is catching up, it has way way less apps though. However, if you compared both android marketplace and appstore's first 8,000 apps, the quality of apps in android would be a win over appstore.

And why is it boring and dumb? Please, enlighten us all. Surely you must have a great, valid reason.

Sure, Apple's OS are generally "simple". They are simple and functional and that's it appeals to many people.

Techbeck said it the best in one of the news articles on the front page...

People are so vain and full of crap these days (not saying you so dont get offended) that they see what is popular and what everyone else has and they HAVE TO HAVE it. Then when they get it they have the attitude that it is the best, nothing else compares, and you are not cool if you dont have one. Amazing how people will go buy what is popular and looks instead of reliability and functionality.

well he said ;-)

I don't really understand why some people feel the need to defend these gadgets to the teeth. First of all, these people didn't design it and they have nothing to do with the device accept paying for it. So, really, why do some people take negative comments on these products as if they have been personally attacked?

I just stated my opinion on a product that I paid for. And, I have every right to complain about it. I am the customer....

And I suggest these people start acting like customers instead of drone fanboys...

I was previously using a ****ty lg phone on sprint. I researched and tested all the different types of is and phones.

I chose iPhone based on my needs and preferences. I personally hated the blackberry ball and keypads and winmo was way too clunky and slow. Just because someone uses something that is popular doesn't mean they are all sheep.

Except nobody called you a sheep.

Zagor was just giving his opinion on the iphone, you and half the other people who replied to this topic took it personally.

Was referring to the article snippet you posted.

Haven't really read most of the thread, but it doesn't seem most people taking it personally. Just a general consensus that you can either buy the iPhone or not and the differences (positives and negatives) of the mobile phone OS's. Since you were complaining about choice, people chimed in it's your choice not to buy it and that it suites the needs of people that do buy it. If they wanted something different, they would have gotten something different.

This is how Apple is and always will be. There's really no point to trolling/flame baiting with topics like this. You knew what would happen. Every kind of topic like this results in the same way.

@zagor: Unless you don't want to sound like a troll, it's generally better to post something more than "it's stupid and dumb".

Except the point of my orignal post wasn't that.

You find windows mobile slow and clunky, and you hate the blackberry ball and keypad, fine thats your opinion. I don't like how apple restricts their software / devices upon other things and thats my opinion.

So my way of seeing things is considered flamebait and trolling, and yours is considered an opinion? Doesn't seem right does it.

Before you accuse others of trolling, you probably should do some self check.

This is how Apple is and always will be.

how possibly do you know that? You don't own the company. And things change very fast. Apple wasn't like this 10 years ago. It probably will be something quite different in 10 years.

Sounds like you really hate the iPhone but you want one, 'sploshun?

A little quote from page 3:

Here's the phones I own / have owned in the past 2-3 years: Nokia n73, iPhone 3g, at&t tilt, and now using HTC Imagio

And no I don't own any blackberry or android devices (apart from running android on my tilt), but I have used some of them.

Now out of the 78000apps how many of them are actually useful in someway compared to how many are just pieces of crap? And not just meant for idiots who can't find better things to spend their money on?

you call people who buy apps from the appstore idiots and then expect people not to take it personal? im not a apple fan, im not a microsoft fan, or a fan of any other multi-billionaire corporation, because IMO if microsoft or apple gave 10% of their ridiculous amounts of money to people that literally can't afford water they would save millions of people. that's the bigger tragedy. but anyway back on point. as I said in a different thread the iphone has forever changed how i use a cell phone. im physically handicapped and with the introduction of veency in 2008, it literally changed my life (i know its a cydia/jailbroken app but still). im not sure if an equivalent app exists on another phone maybe someone could tell me? regardless, for the first time in my life i was able to use a cell phone 100% independently, now, maybe for an able bodied person this isn't a big deal but for someone in my situation, its everything. my 2 cents.

you know what that is why apple is apple even tho that application is a jailbroken app it is an application that made a easy to use phone the iPhone able to be used by you over any other phone on the market.

also for the OP one thing that makes the iPhone great with the App store is that 70% or more of the money that we pay to buy the Application goes to the Application creators only 30% or less goes to apple now i would love to see that happen on any other platform and ya know what it is not happening on any other phone platform andriod based or winMo based but i will say this because of this Model made by apple Sony is doing it with the PSP Go for developers who write applications exclusive to the PSPGo .

now the fact being is the iPhone itself is a great device and with as many helpful apps as ther is on it witch you need to look around at ther is an app for everyone on this site i am sure.

    • Who is paying for this 30x scale-up? Its sounds expensive.
    • Millions of users to benefit from Windows 11's new performance boost on Adobe Photoshop by Sayan Sen Despite the advent of AI-generated imagery, Adobe's Photoshop remains one of the most popular tools on this planet. Adobe does not have a publicly reported total user count but it's probably not wrong to assume there are millions. As of 2025, Adobe Creative Cloud has had approximately 41 million paid subscribers, many of whom likely use Photoshop. In addition, more than 166,000 companies worldwide are apparently also using the app. These figures are according to a very recent report by SQ Magazine. Out of them, it is fair to assume that many are probably running Windows. As such, there is good news for these users as Microsoft has announced Photoshop is getting a big 20% performance boost on x86-64 (AMD64) systems and a 13% bump-up on Arm devices. This is definitely great news for them as many have complained about the slow performance and general sluggishness of Photoshop on Windows 11 ever since the advent of the latter back in 2021. If you are wondering how Microsoft managed to do this, the answer lies in a combination of compiler-level optimizations and a technology called Sample Profile Guided Optimization (SPGO). According to Microsoft, Adobe worked closely with the company’s Visual C++ team and adopted the latest MSVC toolchain enhancements together with SPGO to squeeze more performance out of Photoshop’s CPU-bound workloads. Unlike traditional Profile Guided Optimization (PGO), which requires developers to create special instrumented builds and run lengthy training workloads, SPGO gathers performance data directly from optimized release binaries. This means Adobe could collect real-world usage information which gives a major advantage to this technique, as companies could leverage data collected from actual customer workloads rather than only relying on synthetic benchmark runs. In theory, this should allow optimizations to better reflect how users interact with software in the real world. Thanks to this, there are improvements to code layout, function inlining, hot-and-cold code separation, and other low-level tweaks that help processors execute instructions more efficiently. Essentially the compiler is better able to identify “hot” code paths, those which are most frequently executed, and optimize them accordingly.

    • Glad these prices are starting to come down, but that is still crazy. I bought the 2TB 9100 Pro (slightly more expensive version with PCIe 5.0) last year for $240.
    • The 2TB Samsung 990 PRO NVMe SSD hits lowest price in over three months by Sayan Sen Yesterday, we covered a really good deal wherein you can get a 4TB TeamGroup T-FORCE G50 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD for a low price of just $400 with a special discount coupon. That's just $100 per TB, making it a very good offer during these hard times. The deal is still live, so you can check it out in its dedicated article here if you do not want to miss out. Meanwhile, if you don't have that kind of budget but still wish to buy an SSD for a good price, the 2TB variant of the TeamGroup SSD at $280 its lowest price in over three months. Meanwhile, those seeking 2TB but faster performance can check out Samsung's 990 PRO, which has hit the lowest price also in the last quarter or so, as it's on sale for $370 (purchase links under the specs table down below). Thus, you want a faster drive, get the 990 Pro, or you want more capacity, grab the TeamGroup 4TB linked in the first para. The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $500. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more.
