Hey, I have an update for you guys. My Core i5 iMac's been shipped this morning, and guess what?

My credit card still has this extra 2500 CAD on it. What's wrong with that? Does it really mean I'm getting an iMac for free?

 That would be nice, wouldn't it?

Hahahahaha, that really did make me laugh out loud :p

It happens that I do exactly this with like 3 of my friends hahaha

Oh yeah by the way I went to the Apple Store on Ste-Catherine yesterday to get my iPhone replaced (the switch for the ringer was ... not fully working) and I saw those beasts. Not the quad-cores, but the other kinds of 27 inch. They are simply IM-PRESS-I-V--E. What I particularly love is that they gain 3 inches of space on the screen, yet they are not taller than their older brother.

Just got my Core i5 today :)

I'm still busy setting it up, been doing that since the last 6 hours XD, and then I'll need to reformat my old 24" and set it up for someone. Just for the record, I was extremely busy on it and Xbench scored 185 still. Not bad :)

I noticed no slowdown at all (except for Flash, but was it really surprising that a quad-core 2.66GHz couldn't handle Flash better than a Dual-Core 2.16GHz?) and it has absolutely nothing to do with my old 24"

The monitor is simply gorgeous, I still can't believe this thing is mine hehe

I'll post some serious benchmarks when I'm done.

Just out of curiosity, do you enjoy having both a desktop and a laptop? I cancelled my iMac order because I was a little hesitant about having two machines and trying to keep them in sync, but that Core i5 and 27" screen are really calling to me. :p

To be fair, I don't really like laptops. I have my MacBook Pro, but couldn't use it every day. I really thought about selling it and instead just getting the Cinema Display, but it was too expensive (hell you can get an awesome iMac 21.5" for this price... almost.

And I can't get away from the speed of a desktop computer like an iMac. Especially with the one that I got now, it has absolutely nothing to do with my MacBook Pro, which was slightly better than my old iMac 24".

I don't end up using my laptop much, it's mainly for school. Whenever there's a huge project or something, or boring classes *cough*, then I decide to bring it and use it.

It really depends on your tastes (desktops VS laptops) and speed requirements IMO... and screen size you're asking for :D

Well, well.

I've done a benchmark with XBench, while having a bunch of apps opened, but still. You can compare my old and my new iMac here :

http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=210016

Right now, the biggest downside, IMO, is the lack of Blu-Ray. Next is the non-ergonomic-but-cool-nonetheless mouse. Next is... what, nothing maybe?

Other than that, I noticed that they lowered the minimal setting of luminosity in the new iMac, meaning that when I'll wake up at night, my eyes won't die. Very good thing.

I tried The Sims 3, which I could hardly play at minimum with the older iMac, at full resolution and maximum settings and it was fine :) I think I was getting around 30fps or so, so it's a very nice gaming machine also :)

Xbench is not a good app it's out dated try Geekbench, the highest score I got was 13154 on 10.6.2

How did you get so high? I got 6578 in Geekbench 32-bit. The only change I did was to force the kernel to boot in 64-bit. I have no idea why such a new computer doesn't do it by default already.

Edit : Well, I got 7666 in Geekbench 64bit. Pretty good !

And the older iMacs 10,1, they scored about 4250, which shows in the latest iMacs an increase of over 50% in the benchmarks (32-bit) and about 80% (64-bit), over the last generation. So how did you manage such a high score? It would represent a 200% increase :p

But yeah, I knew Xbench was totally outdated, I just prefer using it though. It's a stupid move from my part, but I guess I never learn.

Btw : I am still very satisfied :) Hell, I'm thinking about doing a whole review, but I know I'd give this thing a 5-star rating automatically. The two things I've mentioned though (no Blu-Ray and non-ergonomic mouse), they still apply and can get on my nerve soon... I could as well add that we still don't have a magnet to place the remote control, but this is gone since the aluminum iMacs came out.

Those new 27-inchers are damn sexy! I think I'll wait for the next major upgrade to upgrade from my 24" 3.02 GHz Core 2 Duo w/ 4GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I got this baby back in early 2008 and I haven't had any problems with it. The screen is huge, it's still fast, it doesn't annoy me, it's quiet, I still have a lot of HDD space left, hell it's just perfect. I have no reason to upgrade yet.

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!
    • Same, never saw it on Android or iOS. Guess only some people got it *shrugs*
