[i]Doom is submitted to the App Store

Recommended Posts

We just got word from John Carmack himself that Doom Classic was recently submitted to Apple for approval.

According to our previous interview with Carmack, Doom Classic will stay faithful to the original with OpenGL rendered graphics along with slightly better sound quality and a "brand new finely crafted control system".

huh? i thought things like that belong firmly in mod territory... i mean, with opengl instead of their original raytracing engine looking up and down is pretty much a given, but are they also going to have 3d models instead of sprites? fog effects? dynamic lighting for projectiles? mods have been doing those for years... definitely not 'faithful to the original' except for the maps and gameplay mechanics....

No. That means that they now use OpenGL to render the exact same scenes as the old software renderer (which runs like poop on the iPhone)

still it would be nice if they at least enable looking up and down... its in true 3d now after all, not some rendering trick they used over 15 years ago...

runs like poop on the iPhone? which port were you running...

What happened to it? I hope was not one of those drop into water/concrete cases :p

Had to sell it. It's not very smart to wave around something that looks like an iPhone in the streets of Mexico. Got a nice and discreet ipod shuffle instead.

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally i finished it on iPhone. Was definately a fun experiance replaying it and rmembering all those fun times i had :)

As for controls...at first i didnt like them, but once Carmack posted how to make them more wolf-like, i could finally enjoy it, after a bit of getting used to.

Anyway it's definately a worthy game :)

    • Nah. For every indie dev that needs to create code for "stuff" or textures, it's a godsend enabler to possibly tackle a project that you may not otherwise. The end result and testing will tell the truth if everything works or doesn't, or a game is just mediocre slop, but now these tools are now there and it's the developer's duty to judge the outcome, and even more so for pro studios. And you gotta remember that they will be at an early stage.
    • whoosh my comment went over your head. Enjoy your notchless 3:2 OLED device
    • As a game dev, today was really depressing. They announced that Blueprints will be deprecated in UE6 to be fully replaced by their sh**ty Python-like Verse language... They also announced that 5.8 will be the last version of UE5 until UE6 comes out in MID 2029!!!! They have completely lost the plot.
