Was wondering how safe it is when you close the lid and just walk around with the MBP in your backpack?

Does walking around with the laptop in the bag warrant a full shut down?

Don't worry about it. Every Mac user I know (including myself) just closes the lid and go!

I recommend hibernating, Stand By users energy and energy = heat. Would it be safe? probably but I just recommend hibernating.

From a theoretical point of view you shouldnt do it as if you expose the HDD to shock while its writing and the head hits the platter your screwed..

In practise most people just do it and nothing bad happens...

sleep and go..... id rather hear that you had to take a few extra seconds and had a long living macbook than to have a head crash......

just depends on how smooth you walk and if it gets bumped round. and round

I'm pretty sure that the default action on lid close is sleep.

I usually hibernate or shut down when I'm going to leave it for a while since sleep seems to drain the battery sometimes.

Yep, closing and going is fine. OS X doesn't do hibernate the same way Windows does. It will always sleep, but if your battery does get too low, the system will go into "safe sleep" mode and keep your data in the same way Hibernate keeps your data (on the hard drive).

Considering the "close and go" mentality has driven notebook sales for nearly 20 years now, I'm pretty sure any major flaws caused by that mentality would have long been discovered and fixed by now.

That's kind of the way windows does it. I've turned off my computer holding the power button while it was asleep and when i turn it back on, the state is recovered.

To the OP.. I think it's safe. But people have a point with the harddrive. Technically the harddrive turns off and only the ram stays on (S3 sleep), but if the battery is running low and os x has to save the state into the harddrive... you better be careful moving the thing :p
