Car Shaking and Jerking w/ RPM going up and down

Recommended Posts

Yesterday after I put a full tank of gas at Chevron in my 1994 Nissan Quest the car started to jerk around and shake. The RPM goes up and down by its self without my pushing on the gas. The only way I can get the jerking of the car to tone down to a little bit is by putting the car in neutral when I am stopped. What do you think is wrong?

I had a similar issue on the wifes 2001 Altima. It would kinda "surge" and the RPM would "bounce" when I came to a stop. Putting it in neutral or slightly pressing the gas (to keep it around 1000 RPMs) would make it quit. Turned out it was the intake gasket was split on the back side of the #4 cylinder.

Or it could just be crappy gas.

My Accord started doing the rpm thing, it will rev up and down at idle but it stops doing it if you give it a bit of gas or simply put it in gear. Someone said it might be a clogged egr valve (there was a recall for that but I stupidly never had mine replaced) or some other sensor. I've got to take it somewhere and have it diagnosed.

First thing.. did this happen prior to you getting the gas? If not, get a bottle of GumOut .. You can find it at any auto part store and should be around $7.. Run with that in it, even if it acts up. Also, take it to a service station and they should run a diagnostics scan for free. Then you will be able to track it down to mechanical or electrical. I had to replace my EGR valve on my 94 Cutlass, wasn't causing quite this issue, but when they do go, boy do they ever. Just start with the simple issue.. OH! Before I end.. Check out Trust My Mechanic Forum It's full of mechanics, and car enthusiasts that have helped me through even the toughest issues..

Is your car a manual or ann automatic?

The car is an automatic.

Also, this happened AFTER I put the gas in. As for GumOut, the fuel system cleaner?

The check engine light is not on.

I might just have to take the car to a mechanic tomorrow. :/

Took it to my mechanic, they don't know wtf is going on. Tomorrow they are going to run some tests and see what's wrong. :/

make sure to get them to check the distributor as well. I kept having to take my car back over and over againbecause they couldn't find anything wrong. Finally and old mechanic got hold of it, checked it, and fixed the problem for me.

Well my mechanic did not know what was wrong and I had to take it to a Nissan Dealership.

They are charging me $125 for diagnostics. Now they are charging me $900 to fix the timing belt because its off, even when I took it to the same dealership and got it changed there 2 years ago, put pressure on the engine and find out whats wrong, and other stuff. :/

Even with the $900 they don't guarantee it to work. What do I do?

Had a 93 blazer with the same problem, RPM would jerk around and it seemed like it was gonna stall, then reved up again, pushing on the gas just a tiny bit kept it from doing that, turns out that the manifold was cracked and the catalytic converter was clogged up, (that's what cracked the manifold), check it out incase the same happens to you. it's not cheap or easy to replace your manifolds
