What Windows 7 SP1 or Internet Explorer 9 should have?

Recommended Posts

I agree that IE9 should be based on WebKit, MS develops Trident too slowly to compete with other browser engines. It should get download manager too.

I believe Microsoft is hard at work on their next generation rendering engine, which I imagine will be in IE9, so I would be shocked if they went to something else... Hopefully it will be good. They are working to be more standards compliant, so that's definitely a step in the right direction.

First: I think windows 7 should warn the user that there hardware is to old and that they should upgrage for better performance...This way it will stop the complainers from complaining about speed and file transfers issues. It's not always the hardware, it could actually be the OS or just the user causing the issues.

Second: I would like a feature that would make it easy to be able to move the icons in the task bar towards the center of the task bar.

third: IE just needs improvement in loading pages more fast and smoothly and render pages better

then people are going to complain ,that Microsoft are bullying them to upgrade , MS can't win

1. PLEASE! please bring back the details bar, I cant stand that they removed it in 7. Without the details bar there is no way that one can filter the files in windows explorer. This is the only thing preventing me from switching to windows 7, I cannot use 7 without this feature!

2. Bring back auto arrange & align to grid! What made them remove these things in the first place?

3. What happened to advanced edit in WMP 12? It was one of the best features in WMP, why remove something that worked perfectly? All I can say is WMP has gone all down hill from WMP 10, which was the last good version!

I agree, add one more thing to do the list, the minimise WMP 12 to task bar and keep it above other documents. I used to love watching video clips or cartoons in the little preview screen while I did work. It made the time fly by. :(

I agree 100% with that, MS should bring back the preview screen or atleast enble us to pin the WMP thumbnail on the taskbar!

I much prefer version numbers, rather than the year. Just about everything Microsoft is now named by the version number rather than the year (with the exception of Office, Visual Studio and possibly some more(?)) - Windows 7, Expression Suite 3, Zune 4.0... they should call the next Office "Office 14" and the next Visual Studio "Visual Studio 10" or whatever, to be consistent.

you are absolutely correct. after the blaster and sasser virus' microsoft was forced to redouble it's efforts on security. What was released i would have actually called a free copy of Windows 2004. As necessary as it was it took too many resources from Longhorn. I still think the original vision for longhorn is far better than Vista or 7

Ya, I've read a few interviews over the past few years with MS staff who say that the work done on XP for SP2 was about the same as a new OS release took in the past and your right, it did pull a lot of resources off Vista which is ultimately a major reason it was delayed again and again.

What you describe/want is already possible in WMP12. It's called the Now Playing mode. Just enable the option "Always on top".

Windows 7 SP1 should (at the latest) fix the stuttering windows animations. And the stuttering "busy" mouse cursor.

I agree and also get tired of ctrl-alt-delete method to try and unstop these hangs on programs, and often times this doesn't work to stop the program from hanging. Not sure what the deal is with this and windows 7 but I'm glad to see it does happen with other people.

2) Smarter system, period. I am not impressed Windows 7 still can NOT do this. :|

Whatever is slowing down the computer, making the computer slow there should be a 'Doctor' in Taskbar notification area WHAT is causing it - File name or process name. And see what solutions are available.

If it's because computer needs to be defragmented. It should tell you that. Or if IE has a bug, tell you that...

I snipped a few windows down there to show the new system troubleshooter. MS hopes that more users will end up using that when their computer is slowing down instead of calling up tech support. Anyway, it's pretty much just a wizard and it runs through telling you what might be slowing down your computer.

It's a little hard to get to right now, so maybe they could simplify it. But under the System and Security category, click Find and Fix Problems, and at the bottom: Check for Performance Issues

Make it easier to select multiple backgrounds. The current checkbox is too small and a simple click too far to one side means the current selections are lost. You have to cancel and start checking the images again.

Ctrl + Click?

Or Shift + Click if you wanna select part of or an entire row?

I actually hate how Webkit renders things; text often doesn't look quite "right" to me. Its odd I know, but true. Smoothscrolling in the other non-IE browsers always felt wrong to me too (though Opera 10 does it pretty nicely from what I remember). We already have a pile of browsers all using Webkit and copying each other; I like IE having something unique about it and having some choice.

I'll agree with the extensions and download manager, but only if the DLM is done right (like Opera's for example); Firefox has an abysmal DLM in my opinion.

Three small things I want in IE9 is something like Opera's Speed Dial, spell checking, and right-click context "Go to" command for highlighted text. These three things are the only reason I keep IE7Pro installed with IE8 (and IE7Pro's EasyHomepage recently stopped working for me, so I had to handcode a homepage with hard-coded links... >.< Not that it was hard, just a PITA.).

IE 9.0 sounds fine.

They wouldn't get rid of the Trident engine as it would **** off corporate customers who have Intranet sites based on IE. The WebKit plug-in for IE (from Google) isn't very stable and actually slowed my IE down and whenever I closed a tab it would crash, so I uninstalled it and now I don't suffer from these problems.

I for one would like some performance improvements in IE 9.

For Windows 7, SP1 should just be a collection of bug fixes and nothing else. Just what a Service Pack should be.
