I'm not trying to be rude or a troll but have you looked at an alternative/free operating system? I assume you want it due to limited hardware capabilities - Xubuntu is a good option given its light weight desktop and most software that is of the age which runs on Windows 98 would probably run under wine without too many problems.

Xubuntu isn't as lightweight as you may think actually, it uses a lot of Gnome libraries under the hood, and has been known to consume as much, if not even more memory than Ubuntu, in fact Windows XP ran more quickly on an old machine that I tried than Xubuntu does. If they want something really light they should be looking at something like Puppy Linux, or DSL

Is there any physical reason why newer versions of Flash can't be used on those distributions?

Have fun. I tried it once and replaced it with something more up-to-date.

I don't think the downloads are even offered on Technet or MSDN any more

They're not, at least not Windows 98 or 95. Oddly, though, you can still download Windows 3.1, 3.11 and 3.2 from TechNet.

Go figure.

I think I've been using a Windows 98 disc as a coaster... don't think it'd be much use to you anymore. I've been considering upgrading my coaster to Windows ME but I hear it's unstable.

(ha ha haa....)

Not if you have it properly installed and maintained....on your coffee table..:p

The funny thing is that you can get Windows 3.1, 3.11 and 3.2 (which I didn't even know existed) but not Windows 95/98/Me.

Windows 3.2 was released only in East Asia, as its only fixes were made to the display of Simplified Chinese characters.

Otherwise, it's identical to Windows 3.1 (and not available in English.)

LOL

I would suggest Ebay. You should be able to pick up a disc for pretty cheap I would think...

I've looked through this thread and I can't see where the OP followed up.

Has anyone asked why the OP wants 98? My mistake if I missed that.

Why not?

Just last night, I installed and used Windows 3.11 for the first time ever. Why? Because I never used it before and was curious what it was like.

Maybe he wants Win98 just to play around with it. I happen to like playing with old operating systems in virtual machines.

    • Yes for me, I installed 'old calculator' (Windows 7 calculator) in its place since it is more useful to me. I think paint is the only one I left installed
