Windows Live Messenger 2010 Mockup

Recommended Posts

Before anything, this is not official. I created the mockup.

It was done firstly in Paint (actually has a good use for once) then it was animated in PowerPoint.

It was then videoed using HyperCam.

Now for the main part:

Watch that ^

It is a video of my mockup in action.

Let me know what you think :)

Other Background Information:

- Ribbon interface is shown, displaying tabbed chats!!

- All one window. No separate windows

- Better scene at top.

That doesn't look too bad actually. :)

I like how you took advantage of the Quick Access Toolbar, and at the same time merged contacts and the contact list into one single window. The legacy menu button could be done away with the File menu, which amongst other things, could be replaced with something similar to Office 2010's Backstage. That could replace the Options dialog entirely.

With regards to the chat window itself, the chat bubbles look fancy but it's a waste of space in my view. I personally like having a simple text-only view; much easier to copy and paste the chat.

Here is an older mockup if you would like to see things a bit more clearly.

Obvious because it's older that the scene in the video is different, and also the bubbles do not fit the size of the window compared to what is shown in the video.

I will attach this to give a clearer view of how the ribbon interface is portrayed.

It could maybe be a bit clearer, but it's hard to get pixel by pixel to match and be consistent.

Also ignore the Contact's name in the scene bit, as I removed the status on the video too (not needed)

Remember to ignore the chat bubbles in this picture as they are an older mockup.

Nice concept. :) Often, mainly people make some incredibly wacko concepts, like full aero glass, some random functions or complete UI changes. Yours however, is really simplistic and realistic.

The only thing I'm not to fond of is what rm20010 said - the chat bubbles. It just seems to be rather unnecessary additions.

Hey JTaylor69, I really like your idea - I have modified three things.

One - the line if you talk later (etc from 10:30 to 10:31 wont create a new chat bubble)

Two - the outline and size of the place where you type is bigger - better visibility for older people who can't see as well.

Three - The arrows are going up, why were they going down in the first place!?

Liking the idea of the double chat bubbles, this will certainly cut down on space.

As for point two, it can be resized anyway, but it's nice how you've made it bigger to appeal to specific groups of people.

Point three, I don't know what you mean by the arrows, where are they?

But anyway, overall great adaptation :)

Oh if anyone wants to know whether this would be optional, of course Microsoft could add an option for users to return to rich text for the people who don't like big changes (I know this as some of my friends were upset they had to move from 8.5 to 14.0)

    • If you don’t get lucky with Valve’s Steam Machine reservation system, you can make your own Steam Machine instead. Valve says that “starting with the SteamOS 3.8 release, you can put together your own Steam Machine using whatever PC parts you want.” SteamOS 3.8.10 launched last week with a slew of updates, including “improved compatibility with recent Intel and AMD platforms.” Alongside that improved compatibility, Valve is giving gamers the green light to install SteamOS on their own desktops. In an interview with The Verge, Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais said Valve has been “rolling out improvements to [SteamOS] so it’s more compatible with desktop hardware,” including eventual support for Nvidia graphics. Griffais says Valve has “a growing team” working on Nvidia driver support for SteamOS, adding, “We’re collaborating with Nvidia very closely.” While he mentioned that Nvidia support might not come this year, Griffais emphasized that “it’s certainly something that we’re working on in the background.”     Subscription not needed: https://archive.fo/Tssfc Subscription needed: https://www.theverge.com/games/953411/valve-steamos-desktop-nvidia
    • I thought they were supposed to reduce the amount of restarts needed to install these updates? It took 3 restarts to install this update...
    • I know an idiot at work who is "Director for innovation projects" and inevitably has been tasked with following up on this whole trend of "AI and its work applicability". He recently sent out a survey on the topic, for the workforce to disclose their usage and attitudes towards AI. The survey was badly, sloppily typed out, the questions and answers (when multiple choices) were loosely correlated and, all and all, it would already be miserable in the times of MS Office Autocorrect alone. Then, I had AI responding to it all (on the open-ended questions) with beautiful, to-the-point prose after I provided it with minor but proper guidance, taking me under 10 minutes. All this to say that I am sure that if AI comes to replace someone, it will still be me, and the other idiot will still stay.
    • Man, the memories.
    • Call me when you can say, "Find all duplicate rows with duplicate email addresses and move the duplicate rows to a new sheet", and Copilot can execute that and not give you VBScript to write to do it. If anyone thinks AI isn't in its infancy and the bubble is about to burst, try to do anything meaningful in Excel with Copilot and you will realize AI hasn't even made it to kindergarten in most use cases yet.
