windows xp startup 2x

Hi,

I reinstalled windows XP sp3 pro. The install is good, but when i boot my computer i can choose for 2 windows xp professional.. the first one boots, the second does not (i think its from my previous install)

I tried to fix it in recovery console of windows xp cd with the commands:

- fixboot

- fixmbr

This did not help.. any other suggestions?

Start > Run > 'msconfig' (without the quotes).

Goto 'Boot.ini' tab, and check your boot entries. If it detects an invalid one, it'll remove it, if not, you'll need to remove it yourself.

I normally make a copy of Boot.ini (for safety), and manually edit the original (as Tony said).

Or, there is a button in the Boot.ini Tab, in msconfig, which you could click -

"Check all Boot Paths"

That may force XP to fix it for you.

Did you format the hard drive before reinstalling? If not I have seen this happen before.

That's normal when you reinstall Windows and it already exists. I don't know why formatting the hard drive doesn't remove it though, but of a bug that one!

ok thanks, i fixxed the boot.ini.

It looked like this:

i removed the last line, now its working as it should.
