Couple of simple overclocking questions

Recommended Posts

I'm fairly new to overclocking (have always tinkered with my gfx cards but never my CPU).

I have a x2 7750+ but unfortunately it's not a BE. (black edition with unlocked multiplier)

The only option I have for overclocking as far as I can see is the clock from 200mhz.

I cannot adjust multiplier or the voltage (which I didn't expect to be able to do).

For the last couple of days i've had it bumped up to 220mhz giving me just under 3ghz up from 2.7.

I've read about what safe temperatures are (i'm on stock cooling) but when viewing through hwmonitor i'm not sure which temperature I should be going off. I'm guessing the two chipset temps are for north/south bridges?

Thing is under the temp for the CPU is says 85c, which is worrying, but the temps for the two cores are at 17-23c and up to 30c under load. Is this what i'm supposed to be going off, or is it that my CPU is actually dangerously high, or that the temperature readings are not correct.

Also since this takes my ram up past 800mhz to 890mhz if I remember correctly is this ok? Can you slowely fry a CPU/RAM with constant heat or is the danger only really one overclock set much too high?

Cheers in advance.

Try CoreTemp. 30C under load is fantastic, if correct.

you cant change the voltages?

dont worry so much about frying anything. people always worry about this, but it's really hard to do unless you REALLY crank something up too far. if anything, you'll overheat and BSOD. no biggie, try again until it's stable.

i dont know anything about that cpu, so check out some AMD overclocking guides online.

Well it ran freaking sweet for 4 days, no problems what so ever, gaming etc every day.

Then last night when I turned it on it wouldn't even post, no lights at the front or anything, so I reset it with the jumper back to default and it works again.

Strange eh.
