*Help* HDTV external display MBP

Recommended Posts

Ok, if anyone with a decent amount of knowledge on using HDTV's as external displays in OS X could help me, that would be great. So first off, this is a software problem, I can use my HDTV perfectly as a display with Windows 7 in boot camp. I'm using a mini displayport to VGA adapter straight to my TV, and it works perfect on 7, the desktop fits the screen on the recommended resolution.

Now, when I boot into OS X(Leopard), I have the resolution for the TV set to 1360x768 which is recommended, I have mirroring turned off, so it's not a problem associated with that, but I get a black space on the top of my screen, about an inch or two of black strip above the menu bar, however, the menu bar is not cut off at all, also, the dock is cut off at the bottom, about 1/4 to 1/2 of it, pretty annoying not being able to see the indicators.

At first I tried changing the v-position with my TV settings, that doesn't work. I can remove the black space at the top by doing that, but a black space will come on the bottom and the dock will still be cut off. So basically my OS X desktop is being projected perfectly horizontally across the TV, but there is a serious problem with what its projecting vertically. I'm aware that this problem does have fixes, I just thought some one with some expertise could help me out here.

I'm pretty sure most standard TVs/Monitors use 1366x768 as the resolution?

I've heard/read it's 1360x768, and that is what my HDTVs native resolution is, it's a 26" Toshiba.

As you can see, the full desktop is outputted on 7 fine. I've been stuck on 7 for a short time now because of this problem.

Every 26" Toshiba TV I can find seems to have a native resolution of 1366x768.

You're right actually, that is the native resolution for my TV, but that's besides the point, seeing as the problem I'm experiencing isn't to do with the pixels horizontally being outputted. My TV with the proper GPU drivers for both OS X and Win 7 don't offer me the option of 1366x768. 1360x768 looks flawless on Win 7 even though it is not the native resolution of my TV.

Must just be Sony laptops then :)

Edit: And a lot of TVs aswell

Hummm ... gotta check the resolution of my 360 that is connected to my 32'' LCD TV then ...

I feel so stupid now :) thank you .

    • Yes for me, I installed 'old calculator' (Windows 7 calculator) in its place since it is more useful to me. I think paint is the only one I left installed
