Uninstalled Firefox 3.6 beta 2 and it's removed everything from 3.5.5&#

Recommended Posts

I installed 3.6 beta 2 alongside 3.5.5 and when I'd played around with 3.6 beta 2 and uninstalled it.

I chose the option to remove all settings etc., since by default it was installed into a seperate folder to 3.5.5 and therefore shouldn't have touched the 3.5.5 installation.

It appears Mozilla are 'tards and I was wrong.

Is there anything I can do to get the cookies, extensions etc. restored in 3.5.5?

Just reinstall your extensions in 3.5.5, no way you can get it back from my experience.

I'll have to find them all, re-configure them all, find (somehow) and install all the scripts for Greasemonkey etc. :/

Mozilla need to fix this problem, or at least make it MUCH clearly when installing and/or removing the betas.

User settings and addons are stored in the users AppData folder, not in Program Files. I thought it was pretty clear what that option meant. Surely, you didn't think it was odd that it had the same addons and whatnot when you fired up 3.6 Beta 2?

Removing 3.5 beta 2 should not have affected the 3.5.5 installation at all. No other beta of a product does that to an older product (especially ones that install to seperate folders!), AppData or not!

I do agree that Mozilla should make it easier to test the betas without messing up profiles, but I thought the uninstaller has a clear option where you have to manually check whether you want to remove you personal data. On the other hand, being a beta tester, you should know better to backup your profile before testing. Heck, I backup even when not testing a new release just to have something to go back to if the profile corrupts. Another option, use the portable version of the beta. Saves the hassle of trying to figure out how to setup two different profiles for each version of Firefox installed.

    • It is when it's a desktop in my house though for a PC that's lightly used and not really important when it is. If it was a laptop, it would be a different story. The real solution is varied and begins starting at post #22 in that thread.
