PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.10) Update Preview

Hi everyone, here?s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3?s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

* The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.

* The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

To get a preview of what?s coming in update 3.10, check out the video below:

We?re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.10 soon. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

Woo, I was hoping the colour option would be viewable to others.

Pink here I come. :D

Though I understand Sony pushing their browser for these features that don't need a special app, like Facebook or Twitter.

The Browser sucks balls, and really needs to be heavily improved if they are going to start putting it out there.

It says they made improvements to the browser for Facebook but in the video, the site layout looks broken.

Looks like Facebook Lite to me, but yes, some of the image are broken.

I wonder why the NetFlicks app wasn't included.

No MKV Support.

And why no Win7 "Play To" feature?

Not impressed with this update.

It's been long confirmed that a Netflix "app" won't be out until late next year, both by Sony and Netflix.

Wait.....

* The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.

People store their photos on the PS3?

Also, can someone explain how the trophies work on the PS3? Yes, I have one. I even have some trophies. Does it basically show you the number of trophies you have in each category and then somewhere on your profile your total number of trophy points? I've actually never ever paid any attention to it.

A Netflicks application wont be coming till sometime into next year, this is supposedly because of the deal between Microsoft and Netflicks.

They get round this with the disk because the PS3 is also Blu-ray player.

They've never mentioned bringing MKV support or Windows 7 Play to support.

Works the same way as Achievements, but instead of different point scores you have Bronze, Silver and Gold. All of which have a point score assigned that add up to an overall level.

You also have Platinum Trophies (which are worth even more points) which you get for getting all the Bronze, Silver and Gold Trophies in a game.

On your friends list you can click on someones name and it will show their gamercard thing which will show their level and recent trophies, hitting R1 will switch to a more detailed breakdown of how many of each trophy they have.

On the card there is also a button underneath (or found by hitting triangle on the friends list) for comparing trophies between yourself and your friends for each game.

That's generally it, I don't think I missed anything out.

More interested in the smaller updates we always find out later :p I have a feeling font size is going to be one of them.

At least that friends list is fixed.

As for Facebook, meh, but I probably will use that purchase info - I like people to know when I get new games :p It isn't a dedicated app but if it works fully with the browser who cares, the downside to MS' twitter/Facebook is you can't open any links as the 360 has no browser. It's bit counter intuitive for Sony to spend money on dedicated apps if they can just update their web browser.

Also where's cross game chat?

Update should hit today as today's Tuesday.

OMG now it can automatically spam my Facebook friends when I get a platinum :D

Another update full of useless features, no cross voice chat no new avatar system like they said would come, no way to revert back to a decent looking XMB before 3.00 i do hope more features come that are useful in this update, seems like they ignored majority of the complaints regarding the 3.00 release, keep up the good work sony :s

Thanks Corris :).

Rumor has it that it's pretty much ready, they're waiting for the green light from the brass.

Well, they'd have said it then if it was coming so I'm pretty certain that it isn't coming this year. Unless there's another update coming in December, then it's all over for this year.

PlayStation Europe Product Manager Chimes In On PS3 Cross-Game Chat

PS3 firmware 3.10, announced last night by Sony, does not appear to bring oft-requested cross-game to the console that only does everything. But according to comments from the European version of the PlayStation.blog, it's too early to give up hope. When asked about the feature, PlayStation Network product manager James Thorpe wrote "I wish I could just give you a date, I really do!! Trust me when I say that as soon as I hear from 'up top' I will be shouting about it and making myself the most popular person on the blog."

"I hope, like you all do, that its sooner rather than later," Thorpe writes, adding a little wink and a smile.

Not a confirmation from Thorpe, but thankfully not a denial.

Last month, cross-game chat was mentioned in a quickly-deleted post by Naughty Dog developer who wrote that "the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat."

Maybe the next-next update then?

Cross game chat for Xmas.

This 3.10 is clearly just a knee-jerk reaction to Facebook on the 360, Sony said themselves it's still a WIP on the PS3 even although they're releasing it now.

This is a 'peek'of things to come in this upcoming patch. why are people still QQing about something not being in this when there's not a single reason for it.

They for example said cross chat would most likely be implemented with the next upcoming patch or close to it, along with other stuff. This video gives you a 'peek' of the new facebook implementation and you guys start to cry a river.

relax. wait for it. it'll come when it comes. you're QQing on assumptions. youre starting to sound like the XBL crowd. :D buckle up!

I welcome any patch. im not into the whole facebook fever myself, but you dont see me QQing about it.

For all it offers, Sony's Facebook implementation lacks the broadly custom-tailored functionality of Microsoft's Xbox 360 version, which launched yesterday. I asked Lempel if Sony planned to add similar features, like linking Facebook and PSN friends lists, browsing Facebook photo albums, dispatching custom status updates, and the possibility of taking screenshots from games, then posting them to your Facebook account.

"You can already access Facebook on the PS3 through the browser," said Lempel, noting that Sony's made improvements to the browser in the 3.10 firmware update he says enhance Facebook functionality.

"While we certainly could have made a native app that lets you do what you already can in the browser, we wanted to start off by doing something different. You can do all that stuff on a PC or in the PS3 browser, and we wanted to give our users a few things they can't do today."

What a cheap excuse.. The ps3 browsers sucks ass and they backup their half-ass release of fb implementation by saying the functionality exists.. I would love to see a native app that lets you browse profiles/pictures etc. along with the current features rather than using the browser... Time to step up your **** or leave the game Sony!

    • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Flip 8, Z Fold Wide: Everything you need to know The ONLY thing I need to know is the price, which I know will be way higher than I (and most people) are willing to pay for a phone... so basically nothing here I need to know. PS: Nice job getting that Apple reference to a non-existent and unrevealed product as "competition" in there. Cheque is in the mail.
    • Well I really think the repasting helped if your higher clocks have returned, maybe the next thing to look at is if there is a problem with your case airflow? I guess this because your 3080 has returned to optimal state, but is still staying too warm, which might suggest it was thermal throttling before you repasted, of which the only logical conclusion could be outside factors.
    • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Flip 8, Z Fold Wide: Everything you need to know by Hamid Ganji Galaxy Z Fold 7 - Image via Samsung The next generation of Samsung foldables is set to be unveiled next month at the second Unpacked event of the year. Samsung’s 2026 foldables are not expected to offer significant upgrades over their predecessors, with the Korean firm instead focusing on design refinements and conventional upgrades such as faster processors and better cameras. However, Samsung is reportedly planning to unveil an all-new passport-style foldable this year to rival Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which is expected to debut this September. Here’s a roundup of everything we know about Samsung’s upcoming foldable devices ahead of their official debut. When can we expect Samsung’s new foldables? The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 series were unveiled in July, and Samsung is expected to maintain this timeframe in 2026. Based on previous reports from Korean sources, Samsung will hold its Unpacked event on July 22 in London, UK, to pull back the curtain on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series. The devices are also expected to hit the shelves a few weeks after launch. However, Samsung has yet to announce an official date. A new naming scheme? One of the most interesting changes we might see this year is a new naming scheme for Samsung’s latest foldables. SamMobile reported that since Samsung is expected to unveil three foldables this year, it has adopted a new naming strategy to simplify product identification for customers. Accordingly, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 will reportedly be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and will serve as the direct successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7. The “Ultra” suffix suggests the phone could feature higher-end specifications, such as additional rear camera modules. Samsung’s new passport-style foldable is expected to carry the Galaxy Z Fold 8 name without any suffix. This model is reportedly equipped with two rear cameras. No major changes are expected for the Flip model. Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8 anticipated specs Rumors over the past few months suggest Samsung is preparing several upgrades for its upcoming foldables, although the devices may continue to rely on larger batteries and faster charging speeds rather than dramatic design changes. The primary focus this year is expected to be the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and its wide-screen design. Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra official CAD renders - Image via AndroidHeadlines Here are the anticipated specifications for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra based on previous leaks: 6.5-inch outer display and 8-inch inner display, 120Hz refresh rate, and 2,600 nits peak brightness Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, paired with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage 4.1mm thickness when unfolded and a weight of 210g 200MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide camera, 10MP or 12MP telephoto camera, 10MP cover camera, and 10MP selfie camera 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired charging Android 17 and One UI 9 As for the Galaxy Z Flip 8, the device is not expected to be a major departure from its predecessor, although it could become slightly slimmer. Expected specifications include: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 or Exynos 2600 processor 12GB of RAM with 256GB and 512GB storage options 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner dispaly and 4.1-inch Super AMOLED outer dispaly 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and 10MP selfie camera 4,300mAh battery with 25W wired charging Android 17 and One UI 9 Samsung’s foldables are also expected to launch with Gemini Intelligence, Google’s AI suite for automating tasks in Android ecosystem. Moreover, given current memory and component costs, some Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8 variants could see a price hike. Galaxy Z Fold 8 adopts a wide-screen design The centerpiece of the upcoming Unpacked event could be the Galaxy Z Fold 8, previously rumored as the Galaxy Z Fold Wide. This model adopts a passport-style form factor and is expected to compete directly with Apple’s iPhone Fold. Galaxy Z Fold 8 official CAD renders - Image via AndroidHeadlines Here’s what to expect: 7.6-inch primary OLED display and 5.4-inch cover display, 120Hz refresh rate, 2,600 nits peak brightness, and 4:3 aspect ratio Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, 12GB or 16GB of RAM, and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage options 4,800mAh battery with 45W wired charging 50MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide camera, and 10MP selfie camera Android 17 and One UI 9 The three new foldable phones are unlikely to be the only devices unveiled at Samsung’s Unpacked event. The company is also expected to introduce the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and the Galaxy Watch 9 series.
