Thinking of loading Linux on a PS3

Recommended Posts

It doesn't wipe out the PS3 OS, but it will make you reformat and repartition your drive (to create the linux partitions), so you will have to reinstall any gamesaves/downloads/etc. As mentioned above, when you are ready to return to the PS3 OS, just run ps3-boot-game-os via the terminal.

3 PS3s? One for gaming, one for Linux...what's the other one used for?

I have an original PS3 (80GB) upstairs in the office, it is plugged into my 40" LCD, mostly for gaming, COD, GTA, etc. The second one (PS3 Slim 120GB) is in my bedroom for Blu-Ray movies and the occasional game (currently just IL2).

I wanted to get another Slim, but just for Linux, no games.

The slims do not have the ability to run Linux anymore.

For performance it's slow. Slower than what you'd get if you bought a computer for the same price and put Linux on it. It's also going to be PPC Linux which will cut down on some of the apps you can use.

I wouldn't bother with it

I have to say ... I put it on, bought a wireless keyboard and mouse ... and then when I booted it ... was disgusted at how crap it is. It's slower than my five year old laptop that's broken. It's horrible. The PS3 is great ... but let's leave it as it is. I will be removing the OS very soon.

Oh, the hell with that idea then!

Thanks for saving me 300$ and countless hours of trouble Neowinians :)
