What's missing from Windows Setup?

Recommended Posts

The overall question I would like to see answered is: What would you like to see changed during the setup process of Windows. Hypothetically, this would be applied towards Windows 8.

For instance, I like the feature they removed from Vista to Windows 7 that asked what default wallpaper you want. I thought it was a novel idea that XP has a default wallpaper, and now 7 does as well, while still allowing highly customized themes.

I like the integration of the Network more in 7, mostly because of built in wifi drivers and the ability to connect to both a network and a homegroup.

Now, I will get the ball rolling. One thing I would like to see is the option to run Windows Update DURING setup, allowing everything to be installed when the setup is done. Obviously, you would still be able to choose which updates you want, or have an option to install all IMPORTANT or all IMPORTANT and OPTIONAL.

i would like to see an "Advanced" mode that lets you choose from a list of components to be installed. like the list that appears after you select the "Custom" radio button in the setup program of Windows 98.

i would also like to see a full function Disk Management app during the install, instead of that feature limited partitioner they have had in there since Vista.

as for Windows Updates, i wouldn't want to be bothered. lack of network drivers on many machines would break this anyway.

I noticed that they removed the Welcome screen that was in Windows Vista, that showed your system specs, proved options to configure the os, i.e wallpaper, ultimate extras etc. i would liketo have seen this return in Windows 7 but more inhanced for the benefit of the user, but not geared toward Windows Live.

I think if Windows Update ran during the setup process, it could lengthen the install process, Windows Update isn't exactly fast at the best of times and what if the update process failed would the os installation fail as well?

Once thing i would like to see in the Windows 8 setup process is a more informative installation like Windows XP were it ran you through features available in the new os, the Windows Vista / 7 setup process is a bit bland to say the least.

I remember reading an article on this, and how it was a huge advertisiting ploy by Microsoft. I didn't care, but I noticed how much it really is.

I think they should have a little solitare game or something for you to do.

Yes, that's what I eould want most as well.

It was quite an ugly move to take away your choice what you want to install, forcing you to install everything and the kitchen sink :x

Also, a more informative installation would be a good thing as well.

+10. They could certainly do that after the WIM is extracted and during hardware PnP detection.

    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
