The Real Napster
I'm looking to upgrade from a very dated AMD Sempron 3000+ processor to a newer AMD dual core unit. I've specifically been looking at the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ but after doing some reading online I am a little worried about making my computer recognize both of the cores. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and I am not very experienced when it comes to Linux, but I have been using Ubuntu since Edgy Eft so I do know how to do some things. Some people said that after I think 7.10 (if I remember right) the kernel is picked that best suits or system requirements (ie a kernel with dual core support). I guess I just want some help with any changes or configurations I need to make after installing the new dual core cpu and have both cores 'enabled'. Any help is appreciated. Rob2687
That whole multi core kernel issue is ancient history. The Ubuntu kernels are built with multi core support so there's no need to install that separate smp kernel. markwolfe Veteran Posted November 21, 2009 Veteran Share Posted November 21, 2009 Even my old Knoppix CD lying around did multi-core just fine (two penguins when booting - each penguin displayed represents one CPU/core) You won't have any issues with multi-cores. redvamp128
In fact you should not even need to reinstall. To give you an idea- I took one of my drives with linux on it to a friends house because their drive failed ... My system had a PIII 966mhz and his system has a dual core amd 64. And just for fun we just hooked it up and it booted right to the desktop and It didn't even skip a beat. So It should not have any issues with it. That was a drive with Jaunty 9.04.
