DSL-2740B Speeds

Hi guys,

A few weeks back my modem died so I purchased a D-Link DSL-2740B. After using the modem for a few days I've noticed that my download speed is about half of what it was with my Netcomm NB5PLUS4W.

I'm on a ADSL1 uncapped plan from Netspace. Previously I was able to download at speeds around 700KB/s. With the D-Link I can't get a download speed higher then 310KB/s.

I've ran a few speed tests and they all come back with the same result.

SNR Margin (dB): 17.1 6.0

Attenuation (dB): 20.0 13.0

Output Power (dBm): 4.1 19.8

Attainable Rate (Kbps): 11744 480

Rate (Kbps): 8160 384

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with this modem??

Any sort of advice or help would be great.

Attenuation should ideally be a lot less than the SNR. When this had happened to me, it turned out to be a line problem.

But 2 days before getting the new modem I didn't have a problem.

I've got the same router, firmware 2.73 and always get my maximum speed (~950KB/s). Which firmware version do you have? Also, stupid question, but have you tried downloading from something like a linux torrent/fast site to check your actual definite max speed? I always get around 250-300KB/s rating in "speed tests" but in actual use, it's much faster.

UUUMMMM? Why would SNR have anything to do with attenuation?

-Sync speed is perfect for ADSL1

-Attenuation is good

-SNR is good

Issues could be:

-Slow NAT translations

-Bandwidth statements

-Packetloss

To rule out packetloss ping your DNS or something 100 times and see if there is any packetloss.

OK I pinged my DNS and I pinged www.google.com.au

Noticed with the Google ping that I lost 2 packets.

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:

Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 12ms, Average = 1ms

Ping statistics for 66.102.11.99:

Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 98, Lost = 2 (2% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 34ms, Maximum = 45ms, Average = 35ms

Well I finally borrowed a modem from a mate the speeds are the same. I even went and bought a couple of new ADSL2 filters and the speeds are the same.

So I finally called Netspace (which I should have done in the first place)! I explained the whole story to the guy, he put me on hold, came back and said he new what the problem was. My exchange was highly congested so my connection had been throttled. He said there was nothing Netspace could do about it because Telstra made them throttle the connection.

So I don't know where that leaves me. I pay $109 per month for a half decent connection which up until 2 months ago I was happy with, now my speeds have been reduced more then half and there is nothing I can do about it.
