Linksys RV042 Router / Gateway Configuration Query

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am using the Linksys RV042 router as a gateway for the purpose of load balancing. I recently changed one of my ISPs and the new ISP is using some wireless technology that I don't understand. It is based on wi-fi and it is not WiMax or 3G.

On WAN-1 port of the RV042, I have one Internet connection configured for static IP and it is working fine. Here, the WAN-1 port is fed by the ISP's ADSL modem which is configured in bridge mode.

On WAN-2 port of the RV042, I have connected the NEW Internet connection. Here, the WAN-2 port is wired to some kind of wireless device of the ISP which is placed on my terrace. I cannot configure the RV042 to connect to Internet through NEW ISP. They have provided me user-name and password but they don't work. In case of earlier ISP, it worked fine in WAN-2 with PPPoE with the old ISP's ADSL router in bridge mode.

In the case of the new Internet connection, when I connect it directly to my PC, it automatically directs me to a webpage: http://192.168.240.1/24online/webpages/client.jsp. Here I enter the username and password given to me and then works fine. But it doesn't work via my Linksys router.

My feeling is that the new ISP's router has to be set up in bridge mode and only then I can login to the network via my Linksys. Now if they do not allow me to do that, is there any way out for me?

Will it help if I setup my Linksys router in Router mode rather than Gateway mode? I can access the ADSL modem of ISP 1 and set that device back into router mode from bridge mode. The ISP2 is already in router mode. Would it work for me? If not, what needs to be done?

If the Linksys RV042 is running in router mode, what does it mean for Load balancing and giving preferential treatment to different clients?

Thanks

EDIT:

I also wanted to know if what I believe is right or not:

Linksys Router in Gateway Mode CONNECTED TO Bridged ADSL Modem/Router = Works fine (Static as well as PPPoE)

Linksys Router in Router Mode CONNECTED TO ADSL Modem/Router in Gateway Mode = SHOULD work fine (or not???)

"to a webpage: http://192.168.240.1/24online/webpages/client.jsp."

that sounds like a captive portal time of thing -- and sure your behind a nat.. But how is the linksys going to log into a captive portal? Kind of like what you get at a hotel, etc.

Your going to contact this new ISP.

    • I totally disagree. Very little good comes out of governments all around the world manipulating everything they can and usually the people are not the benefactors. What you say about being restricted and expensive sounds almost like the arguments against firearms and why banning them will protect people as if making something illegal somehow will prevent the criminals from having and using them. AI being far less mainstream could simply mean the average person will not benefit, but "big brother" and the corporations will benefit, which is almost for sure NOT a good thing.

    • "connect with audiences" is the most obvious corporate speak you can think of. I only bought Need for Speed from EA because it was the only racing game with cops in existence and I dig that. Now that they killed off NFS franchise, I have nothing to spend money on. EA is officially dead for me, just like Ubisoft which I've been boycotting for some 20 years now...
