XP Mode on Win-7 64 bit

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am running Win-7 Pro 64bit and installed XP mode but when started it is only running in 16bit. the 32bit is grayed out the setting. Also in Device manager there are 3 yellow question marks but i cannot find out what there are for. Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode were downloaded from Microsoft.

In XP Mode\Device Manager under G/Card it says "Virtual PC Integration Components S3 Trio32/64" <<< this is not my G\Card as you will see from my computer spec below. Does this mean i need to install drivers for my G\Card.

The funny thing is when i installed the program VMLite and installed it with XP Mode everything is ok and it's running in 32bit and also a lot faster.

also which is the best Virtual PC software.

any ideas as to why

Computer Info

MSIX58 Pro Crosfire/SLI with latest bios.

6Gb DDR3 ram

ATI Radeon HD 3400 << running on this card only because on of my crossfire cards went up in flames :)

Ignore the graphics card that XP inside xp mode is reporting, since that is a 'fake' card, so to speak. You will not see your own graphics card.

The reason the 32 bit color is greyed out is because you are seeing the XP desktop using remote desktop connection instead of seeing the actual screen. A bit bizarre, but that's what lets windows 7 treat windows inside xp as their own (if you're doing the whole integration thing).

If you want to be able to see the windows xp window in 32 bit , you need to go to "tools > disable integration features". Then restart the virtual machine. That will make the option appear again, and with that the proper icon shadows and possibly even the desktop background
