So I have a wrt310n right now with dd-wrt, I can use that to run two SSIDs on the same router, but that'd take extra resources, right?

Since I have spare wrt54g (stock firmware), I figure I could connect that by wire to the 310, and then set it up as a wireless access point, creating the two SSIDs that I want and not using any extra resources on the first router.

Should be simple, but wanted to run the idea past you guys in case there's something obvious that I overlooked.

Are there any problems to this setup?

Thanks!

No should work just fine. Even with DD-WRT and using the Virtual Interfaces area shouldn't be that much "resources" as you are worried about. To make it simple i would just run the 1 system and maybe use the other router as a repeater if i need stronger signal in another part of the house.

Well the other thing I also had in mind would be that if I ran both on the same router I'd have to reconfigure it every time I updated the firmware, whereas running it on a second one would modularize it.

I actually don't really know what I'd do with it, I just want to play around a bit I guess. Maybe run an open access point in addition to my own? heh.

thanks!

Ok and how are you going to limit this open access point from accessing your machines? Your not going to want to run a less secure wirless network that has access to your computers network??

Sure if you want to use it with only access to the internet - sounds fine.. Which is what you can do with the multiple SSIDs on the one router... If your going to use it on another router, your going to have to vlan its connection to prevent access to your network and only allow internet access.

Make sure you limit its access to only internet.. there are quite a few writeups how to do it on dd-wrt

Hi Bud,

I used the tutorial over here http://www.pennock.nl/dd-wrt/Multiple_BSSIDs.html

Is it good?

Thanks!

On the topic of the resources...

Even if you had 2 seperate "routers" (as you incorrectly stated)...

The second would have been only an access point, with a different SSID. The first one would have its own SSID on its AP, but would still be routing all of the data between the second AP, the first AP (techincally switching), and the internet (true routing).

Well the one you linked to is blocking access to the router be it ssh, telnet, www, etc.

The one you have is blocking wireless networks from talking to each other, While allowing access to the internet. The one I linked to is is making rules for dhcp and dns. But still allow access to the internet but not the other network..

Its late, but there are more than one way to skin a cat -- Im not sure you need those specific ssh, telnet rules -- for starters are you even listening no ssh or https? ;)

Like I said there are multiple guides out there, so some people go about it in different ways.. I would suggest you stick with the one you found, if works then great!! If not then look at the other guide, etc.

From a quick look those rules look fine - but again its late, etc. Just test it and make sure it is doing what you want.

    • After enabling it in about:config, customize, density, compact; the toolbar/address bar gets smaller vertically. I enabled Nova, I notice the tab bar/title bar is a bit larger vertically now? Everything always becomes a waste of space.
