Corrupted SD Card

Recommended Posts

Help!

I have an SD card full of pub quizzes that I run, this contains the last 2 years worth - and while this may seem trivial stuff, I would really like to have it back.

I was using the SD card in the slot in my laptop and saved some files to it. All saved fine, no problems.

I then rebooted my laptop with the card still in. Upon reboot, Windows failed to detect the drive, moreover it said the drive needed to be formatted before use.

I took the card out and tried it in another Windows machine, same error. Ubuntu also fails to read it.

I have NOT formatted it.

I have tried Recuva, but seeing as there is no drive, there is nothing it can see to recover.

What other options are open to me at this stage?

did you try googling "memory card data recovery" there is a lots of software for such problems (but honestly I never tried them)

let me know how things go

Edit: can you check the card for any thing that looks up-normal maybe it got broken or something

what is the size of the sd card

how large where the files you saved to?

how much free space was there before and after you made the save?

to save some time on waiting for my reply

if you just went beyond 50% of the size of your sd card and it has failed there is a good chance you're using a counterfeit chip where it pretends to be twice as big as its true size

so when you start writing to the second half its really just the first half effectively corrupting your device best bet it to stop writing to it and try to recover whatever you can

thats assuming its counterfeit

Hi.

I have managed to recover pictures from an SD card using Recover My Files from www.recovermyfiles.com. You can download a free trial which will do the scan and show you what it can recover. If you see what you need then you need to pay for it to save the files to another location. Has also worked on formatted drives too.

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
