is there anyone to choose not to combine programs of the same type (ie multiple MS word windows) but also hide the title of the program so only the icons show?

You have to edit the registry. Make a new string "MinWidth" in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" and set it to "-56". Restart and set taskbar to either setting that normally would show text. I've tried it, it works. Just be careful messing around with the registry. Do a backup beforehand.

Kinda what I thought. Needless to say, that was a short-lived experiment.
