Datel suing Microsoft over Max Memory card lockout

And I guess Sony selling a HDMI cable for $99 just because the plugs where gold plated is 100% fair?

And I guess you know you can use any HDMI cable on either of the consoles? That's what an open standard is, choice.

MS also sell you an HDMI cable for $50

Yeah, you have the choice. They can bump up the prices all they want - because if you *need* it...

You need it! So you'll buy it.

Unless yer shifty. :]

And you don't need a 120gb HDD, that's what optional accessories is, choice.

( See what I did thar' )

I know you don't need it.

You don't need a gaming console either :p Everyone should pimp their PC's out instead clearly right? I actually just booted up RE5 on the PC in the effort to actually complete it, god it runs so much better. No more screen tearing, and 60FPS! And 360 controller works with it also.

Well yeah, but this was never a need or don't need convo between me and bob_c_b, it's about my opinion that MS will adopt a more open policy next generation and I'm finding it a bit surprising people are so seemingly against the idea, that's all.

Ahh, I see.

I see nothing but benefits about MS having more open policy. It's good for all of us. Good for the consumer, and good for first and third parties. Also, for instance good for manufacturers of hard drives getting business from console gamers.

Looks win-win to me. Nice economy booster.

Wow, way to dodge the issue there

That issue is irrelevant to this discussion, way to dodge my answer. All the consoles can use any HDMI cable you want meaning anyone buying a cable at $99 is daft. You can buy one at $4. In fact, any device that uses HDMI can use any cable you want.

Of course you dodged the issue, my point was that Sony rip people off just as much as Microsoft do, a point you are doing your level best to avoid, because you don't like it.

When was that ever the discussion?

We're talking about the 360 and PS3 and their addons/capability, not the companies on a whole.

You can make your point but it's not what I was talking about, so I'll avoid it out of relevance or you'll have a stupid list war going on in here of every single product people think MS/Sony overcharge for.

edit: And yes, a $59.99 official cable is a rip off. A ?14.99 official PS3 cable is still a rip off.

Translation: I am going to dodge the issue rather than accepting that my dearly beloved could do something wrong because it could call my hate for Microsoft into question.

Have a lovely day :)

What issue? HDMI cables? What do they have to do with this topic Frank? You can't even answer that yourself.

Hate for MS? Jeez now we know what's up, someone is on the defensive, I love MS. Doesn't mean I have to like everything they do.

On the defensive? I don't even own any gaming consoles, I game on my PC

And the point is simple, you tried to bring up the fact that Microsoft where ripping people off by overcharging for their hard drives, yet when the argument about ripping customers off is turned around onto Sony, suddenly it becomes offtopic, and irrelevant, classic diversionary tactics.

Because as I said the products you are bringing up have nothing to do with this topic or the 360/PS3. Yes both of them use HDMI cables but I've already shown you you can use any $4 HDMI with each, you cannot use a standard OEM drive with the 360, you can the PS3 - That's where this topic went, it's mostly about storage.

MS/Sony/Apple/'Insert Company Here', all overcharge for certain components, heck the Dualshock 3 is overpriced.

Seeing as you don't own any gaming consoles maybe you shouldn't get so involved in topics about them, it seems you don't really know as much as you think.

Actually, i'd say I am better placed to share my opinions, because unlike yours, mine aren't blinkered by blind fan worship of certain products over others.

Carry on my wayward son....

Im lost here

Why would datel win this battle?

If M$ want you to only use there licences equipment with thier own 360, how can a company come a long and sue because M$ has stopped thier equipment from working on it?

Im not saying its good for M$ to do this but i don't get why they will win a case when its M$ own machine?

It's still the case, but tbh there's no real reason to want to buy a 3rd party controller over official... not that that makes it any better. I guess it does affect some things negatively though, like the logitech G25/G27, two of the most popular steering wheels, can only be used on the PC/PS3.

It's not the 90s any more, nearly every electrical goods device that supports addons is allowed official and 3rd party now... Can you imagine if Apple didn't allow any 3rd party iPhone/iPod addons? :|

If there's one thing MS did wrong with the 360 this generation in amongst everything they've done right, it's rape people with accessories.

I believe they locked out 3rd party controllers for first two years - it was announced at launch as such. They opened it later on. That's the reason the first Guitar Hero on 360 had a wired controller.

Hey bud if you like rocking the proprietary hardware just because it fills MS pockets with money, power to you.

Frank Fontaine so has your number, blind faith in Sony. I never said I liked it (MS charging more for storage), in fact several times I said I didn't, but you tend to ignore parts of any post that don't fit your always floating argument (as well as pretending the history of companies and their products have no bearing on current conditions or future owners).

And I agree with Frank, had the hardware issues not crept in MS would have run away with this generation last year.

Faith? Thanks for the consult father, but I'm not interested.

Oh and Frank doesn't have my number, I don't put out that easily, cmon! I may be Scottish, but I'm not a slag.

Audioboxer btw MS dont use propriety IR in their controls they use proper wireless. IR would involve line of sight.

MS has the right to license like any other. The king of overpriced accessories is the Wii with 2 versions of their controller and you STILL really need the other part and both together adds up to be a hell of a lot over a xbox/ps3 controller.

MS/Sony/Apple/'Insert Company Here', all overcharge for certain components, heck the Dualshock 3 is overpriced.

Exactly. So is there really any point just aiming the complaints at MS when everyone is at it?

Its pretty obvious that Datel were up to something dodgy anyway (circumventing copy protection etc), so its not surprising at all that MS has blocked their devices. Don't think for a second that Sony wouldn't do the same thing if the situations were reversed (actually, sony have been a bit uptight about the bluetooth technology for the controllers haven't they? Pretty sure thats why rockband etc have dongles that you have to plug in).

Anyways, haven't apple done essentially the same thing with the iPod shuffle? You can't use "normal" headphones because of the controls on there (Unless someone's released an adapter type thing now). And I can't remember people complaining about that.

I did! but its hard to have your voice heard over fanboys clucking about how that was the best idea ever and how it really is for the best as per Lord Jobs word.

    • The entire world moved to the vastly superior and now universally supported Dolby Atmos technology a very long time ago, mate.
    • Insane. This is as crazy as COVID back in 2020, where you could go back one year in time and tell them that everybody's gonna be locked in and now with memory that your old computer was going to be worth more tomorrow
    • "Bad Pool Caller" meaning one of your software is trying to change memory it doesn't own, in a memory pool that's it ,nothing to do with Windows
