Google Chromium running on the MSI Wind Netbook

Recommended Posts

I was looking for more information about Googles Chromium OS and came across this website: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-goog...-real-computer/

They have created a bootable image of Chromium OS which can be dumped to a 4gb or larger usb drive, sd card and so on.

I have managed to get it working pretty well on my MSI Wind, here is a pretty boring video I made of it booting and showing a few different options on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k37agcHCKc0...player_embedded

It can display the MSI Winds native 1024x600 screen resolution, sound and ethernet work however wireless doesn?t at the moment.

Im not sure about bluetooth or the webcam as there?s no software to make use of them.

I believe it should also work on the Dell Mini 9, Samsung NC10, Acer Aspire One and other netbooks with similar hardware.

There you go, Chromium running on real hardware for anyone who is intrested in trying it out.

That answers my question about the size of the SSD/flash drive required to boot the OS (for those models without a HDD). People are often worried about the cost of SSD but when the capacity is only 4GB then it really isn't a factor.

I?m not sure why it?s so big, its only 305mb when zipped up.

If it helps work out what the space is been used for:

I only know the very basics when it comes to Linux, I would guess the actual os is only taking up 589mb? (the rootfs bit?)

The actual space available adds up to more than 4gb too?

I got it from the torrent posted here: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/download-goog...-real-computer/

When its released you will be able to install it on certain approved netbooks according to the news post on Neowin the other week.
