Sony Fights Gamesharing, New TOS

Recommended Posts

In-game items or content that you have purchased may be downloaded from PlayStation?Store. Pursuant to the particular terms of use that govern a specific in-game item or content you have purchased, you may use that item or content on up to three (3) different PlayStation?3 systems that have been activated for your account. You may deactivate or activate specific PlayStation?3 systems, as long as the maximum activated number of PlayStation?3 systems for your account at any given time is three (3).

* The first category, called Network Content, can only be accessed by one activated PlayStation?3 system per day and only by the account through which the Network Content was purchased. Network Content cannot be used on two different PlayStation?3 systems within a twenty-four (24) hour period.

* The second category, called Local Content, once installed on a PlayStation?3 system by the account that purchased it, can be accessed by other accounts on that same PlayStation?3 system.

This means that, if a game is purchased, it can only be downloaded once every 24h, meaning games can?t be shared immediately.

Things are okay for accounts with 5 activated PS3s right now, but if one is deactivated, it's not getting activated again, nor is any other if the number is > 3.

I'm a bit screwed if my current PS3 breaks, or I change it, I opened up my main account to sharing instead of just a fak:rofl:unt

As it stands

1. My old PS3 I sold, didn't know about activation at this point

2. My current PS3

3. DrunknMunky

4. MightyJordan

5. ???

I can't remember who else has an a:/ivation :/ Dirk?

I was going to ask my parents to get me a Slim in America, but as it stands even if I deactivate my current PS3 I'm still at 4 shares which is too much and I won't then ever get my account back unless 2 of them are deactivated.

Apparently you can phone Sony to deactivate, but they'll ask for a receipt for each console. I'm sure if you bitched enough you could get them to master reset though.... but I think they'll be getting a lot of that now.

Can't say I'm surprised, I thought they would have done something about it sooner.

But I suppose 3 is better than taking them all away from those in the sharing groups.

The current gamesharing 'groups' aren't affected. Well as I said above nothing changes unless people start deactivating, then they can't back in if the number is > 3.

I think Sony were naive to how badly this system would be abused, devs, especially PSN indie devs have probably been giving them a hard time over it on all the "lost sales".

The system was/is in place so the account holder can share content on up to 5 PS3s he/she owns.

Wait so active share accounts are still ok for 3+ people?

Yes, all hell would break loose if Sony randomly axed 2 PS3s from their content on every single account out there with 5 activations :p

So I am still not following. Me and Piggy have a share account set up with a few other people, are you saying since we set that up prior to that announcement, we can keep all the people intact, or do you just mean that our older purchases are still fine, but any future purchases can indeed only be shared by 3 of us?

But future purchases on that account are now limited to 3 activations, right?

No, once a PS3 is activated it's activated for everything purchased in the future as well.

Content isn't activated on a per content basis, it's activated on a per PS3 basis.

You're fine.

Anyone who deactivates from the group isn't though, if the number is still > 3 and they want back in.

Just contacted everyone I've shared my account with, feel bad for them for taking away their content, but I'll have no way to use my Slim unless I get everyone to deactivate :(

That's what happens when you dive into sharing without reading the T&C clearly (happened on like page 2 :p)

Just PM'ed you back. I'm really gonna miss WipEout HD. :(

A bit has changed from when you first started sharing though: I've actually bought a PSN game now! :p Or to be more precise, I bought two. I got Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, then later on I got PixelJunk Racers. I also got Bishi Bashi Special, which is one of the PSX games available on the store. I loved playing it when I was young, but back then, most of my games were pirated, so I didn't have an original version of BBS, but now I've got it for the PS3 and the PSP. :)

Again I'm sorry man, but im like 99.9% sure I'm getting my Slim. Parents want a media streamer/blu ray player and they're actually flying out Thursday, and arriving late Thursday night, in other words they're there in time for black friday (cheap PS3). They'll end up with a Slim which I'm going to then acquire and swap with my fat monster :p

I won't actually have it for another 2 weeks, so if you have things to complete in Wipeout, I can wait? If you don't care I'll PM you a password.

Also, here's a chip-in from a Shatter dev on the NeoGAF thread that broke this news

From a developers perspective, it was never really explained clearly why they allowed it in the first place. Our perception was it was to cover PS3 hardware failure, but the Tretton quote confused things. Sony has always been relatively quiet on the matter outside of that.

Based on numbers I have shared with other devs, some PSN games have been heavily shared, with over 20% of copies falling into that category. It is tough to say whether revenue is lost or gained by allowing gamesharing as arguments can be made either way. I think it is certainly another factor in decreasing the price points that people are willing to pay for stuff though.

Taking some technicalities aside, in general I prefer the XBLA DRM model, though XBLA sorely needs the pricing flexibility that PSN has.

I still need activations back for my :/im though :/ As I obviously want to have my account active on both PS3s in the house so I can let my parents download any content I have.

Don't worry, I'll still deactivate mine. And then afterwards, I'll go onto the PSN Store and buy WipEout HD Fury.

Quick question to everyone. If you ring up Sony and ask them to deactivate, do they only deactivate every single PS3, or will they let you do one at a time? It's because I let a friend activate her PS3 on my account to gain access to Tekken 5 DR, but we haven't been friends for a long time (thanks to her friends), so I want to get her PS3 deactivated on my account.

Good luck trying to ring up Sony and getting them to deactivate your console.

That's the whole reason they gave you 5, so if you lost a PS3 or it broke or something, you could still get your content. Not to game share.

Says who? Have you ever tried to get them to reset your account? Well I know someone who did and Sony gladly reset their activations.

+1 Tried and failed. PS3 was no loner in my possesion and couldn't deactivate, Sony said they were unable to help.

OK, never mind then. I was just panicking a bit. The girl who I shared my account with very rarely goes on her PS3 (we're talking about once every couple of months), so I shouldn't really worry about it.

I'm not sure if maybe I already activated 5 but I don't recall doing so, but anyways it seems like the limit is actually 3.

Just today I tried to activate a new ps3 for a friend and he would of been the 4th one but it's not letting me download anything because it says I've already activated 5 consoles when I'm pretty sure I didn't.

    • Apple Watch Series 11 GPS just crashed to 30% off in this fast-moving Prime Day deal by Karthik Mudaliar The Apple Watch Series 11 is available for $279, down from its $399 list price, saving buyers $120, or 30%. Amazon labels the offer as selling fast, so the current price may not remain available for long. This GPS model features a 42mm aluminum case, an Always-On Retina LTPO3 OLED display capable of reaching up to 2,000 nits, and an Ion-X glass surface with improved scratch resistance. Apple rates Series 11 for up to 24 hours of normal use or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode, with fast charging providing up to eight hours of use from a 15-minute charge. Health and fitness tools include sleep scoring, temperature sensing, ECG support, heart-rate alerts, workout tracking, sleep apnea notifications, and hypertension notifications, where available. The watch also carries IP6X dust resistance and 50-meter water resistance. This configuration is best suited to iPhone owners who want comprehensive health tracking, notifications, contactless payments, and workout data without stepping up to a larger or cellular-equipped model. The smaller case should also appeal to buyers who prefer a lighter watch, while the S/M band fits wrists measuring 130mm to 180mm. With the current generation now significantly below its usual retail price, this is a strong time to replace an aging Apple Watch or buy a first model without compromising on Apple’s newest health and display features. • GitHub removes manual model selection from Copilot free and student plans by Karthik Mudaliar GitHub is removing the ability to manually select an AI model from its Copilot Free and Student plans, making its automatic routing system the default and only way to choose a model. This means users on these tiers will no longer be able to deliberately select a particular OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or Microsoft model for a task. In its announcement, GitHub said Copilot Auto will dynamically choose what it considers the best model for each request. Free and Student accounts will retain access to models from multiple families, although the available selection will continue to depend on the restrictions attached to each plan. GitHub did not identify a fixed pool of models that Auto will always use, and its documentation warns that model availability can change over time. GitHub describes Auto as more than a random fallback system. On supported surfaces, its task-optimization technology evaluates the complexity of a request alongside real-time information about model health and availability. Straightforward prompts can be routed to faster and less expensive models, while more demanding coding tasks may be sent to higher-cost reasoning models. The company says this approach should reduce rate limiting, latency, and failed requests. Auto generally selects one model along natural prompt-caching boundaries rather than repeatedly switching models during a session, as GitHub found that mid-session changes increased costs without producing sufficient improvements in output quality. Users can still check which model generated a response. In Copilot Chat, the information appears when hovering over an answer, while Copilot CLI and the Copilot cloud agent display the selected model alongside their output. Auto is available in Copilot Chat, Copilot CLI, and the cloud agent, with the exact implementation and release status varying between supported development environments. The latest restriction follows several months of adjustments to Copilot’s individual plans. GitHub temporarily halted new Pro, Pro+, and Student subscriptions in April as it sought to manage demand and service reliability. It later introduced token-based billing and began gradually reopening individual-plan registrations on June 17. Alongside the picker change, GitHub is retiring the “Preview” label from Microsoft-developed models. It argues that the label is no longer necessary because Auto handles model routing and models are continuously updated behind the scenes.
