COD4 PunkBuster auto-update connection problem

Recommended Posts

I've just bought COD4 Modern Warfare over Steam and installed it.

Single player works great. However, when I try to load up multiplayer it says that as it's my first time, it needs to update PunkBuster. PunkBuster then starts up an auto-update dialog and says "Downloading global config files" which hangs around for about 10 seconds then says "Downloading of global config file failed for the following reason: connect() timed out!".

COD does then start up but PunkBuster doesn't work so I can't enter any games. I've tried restarting, updating drivers and all sorts. I've looked all over the web for fixes. Quite a few places suggested downloading PunkBuster files manually which I have done (from http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=dl-cod4.php) but it still insists on auto-updating each time I start up COD multiplayer.

I've tried installing PunkBuster separately (with the intention of then adding COD4 to it) but each time I try to set it up it tries to auto-update and fails.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. I'm at uni and there is a proxy but the EvenBalance site says that that shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone have a solution? Please don't fail me Neowin!

Having same problem here over normal home adsl network.

Other games works fine. Single player COD4 works fine. I bought mine copy weeks ago and only got to play it today.

Define "other games" please...

BF2, Trackmania, Halo 2, TF2. They all play fine online.

Well I sure am glad that you don't have PB problems with Trackmania, Halo 2 and TF2. Because if you did something would be seriously wrong. All I can sugest is that you file a support ticket with Even Balance. I know its not fun, they have horrible customer support. I got about 2 responses from them a week, so I took about a month for them to let me know I wasn't the only one that was having a problem and that they would have a update out soon to fix the problem, and then close my support ticket...

You could delete the PB folder from your COD4 installation and then use PBSetup to reinstall punkbuster.

Once that is done, use the PB Service installer (http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe) to uninstall and then reinstall the punkbuster services.

That would be the equivalent to an entirely clean PB install, so that should sort it for you.
