[iPhone] Epic shows off Unreal Engine 3 running on iPhone / iPod touch

your forgetting about the touch screen... it doesnt need to be a d-pad, it can be any 2d interface... wheels, sliders, trackballs, etc.... consistency is probably still an isssue unless they have it really tweaked properly...

yea, i think the problem lies in the lack of physical buttons. you can't expect to stay consistent/effective in a game where you have to take your eye off the surroundings in search of a virtual button. screen real estate is another issue. how many times has your fingers strayed off the edges of the screen? or lacked cat-like reflexes due to a mob slipping by from right under your fingertips? it's just not something that can be fixed by tweaking settings. it's a design limitation. every time i see a game with a virtual pad i cringe. i want to enjoy these games, of course. the potential is there. but due to this limitation, fun comes at a toll. especially towards fps games. i cant even enjoy the nes emulator cause of this. and those are 2D side scrollers mostly. :(

games that i find that work beautifully are the dual virtual analog type games. Nano Fighter, Alive4Ever and Minigore to name a few. All excellent games. They keep a minimalistic and very effective formula in which you dont really have to take your eyes off actual game surroundings.

Car racing games are awesome and work really well. the accelerometer when tweaked accordingly works flawlessly. need4speed is sweet. i play Real Racing and enjoy playing in first person/cockpit view. there are plenty games that favor touch screen.

yeah, no physical buttons is something that is going to make things different... for one thing, the traditional concept of aiming at the middle of the screen would be quite deprecated on a touchscreen, since you have to move your finger on the screen, to change the view thats on the screen, and guide it to where you want to aim... its like working through 2 layers ....

if you can shoot at where you tap on the screen, that would be ideal... you'll need some other mechanism for moving your view, tho... probably something like the 'trackpad' control they show in the video, drag = move view , tap = shoot ... you cant hold down a mouse button and there's no secondary fire, but yeah, thats more reason to have that gaming button peripheral attachment....

now iw as reading this review of this game on the iphone and i must say it sounds impressive but you need a 3rd gen ipod T or 3gs in order to get the full quality and performance out of the game

Ravensword is an attractive game ? if you play it on an iPhone 3G S or a third-gen iPod Touch. The faster processor and extra horsepower pushes the draw distance back and adds a number of additional lighting effects. Now, Ravensword is completely playable on a regular iPhone, but it is slow and not nearly as pretty as you see in screenshots. There is a lot of fog ? kind of like an old Nintendo 64 game. The faces of people are a touch odd and some of the monsters models are a bit ugly (I will just assume this is on purpose since they are monsters).

oh and as for FPS games on the platform and controlling sachems Id software has in all the games i listed for them different control scheme modes to allow the user to find what is right for him or her

Doom classic on ipod/iphone also the guy or kid showing the differant control scheme

Doom 3 resurection iphone/ipod T

Ravensword is REALLY good from what people are saying. I can't get into RPG games but they all say its fun and looks great.

From what I am being told they are working on a MMORPG for the iPhone. Which would be AWESOME if done correctly.

Looks sweet but it won't do any favours for battery life.

that is true but i am sure it is not as bad as ya may think it is on battery life or so and maby also that is why Apple dont do multi-tasking just for that reason

Not that im going to play any fps on iphone, but that just shows how amazing ue3 is. Or in other words - holy crap! :o

True, even the best rated FPS games like Brothers in Arms don't play that well in comparison. Still that is a smooth demo of UE3, gears of war on iphone would be epic!

    • Microsoft admits one of the most crucial Outlook features is currently broken by Sayan Sen Microsoft is making some decent progress when it comes to Windows 11. Recently we have confirmed reports of some rather useful improvements landing in the next version of the OS, 26H2, wherein GPU driver TDR crashes may finally be fixed, plus the company is also allowing users to disable web content on the Search. On the Outlook front though things have not been so rosy. Last month in May we reported several problems affecting basic functionalities on the app. These included a problem where documents would open blank or corrupt themselves. Following that, Quick Steps, a very useful feature, would no longer work correctly, and finally, Microsoft acknowledged a problem wherein images would fail to load up properly inside the email. Microsoft had resolved those bugs later and almost exactly a month after we reported on them, the company has now admitted a new similarly basic issue, this time on Macs. Users recently started noticing that Outlook would no longer display email threads properly as the original message itself was not displayed. An affected user Tsoumpas, C (ngmb) nicely described the problem in a forum post they made on Microsoft's site. They wrote: "Description of the issue: After updating Outlook for Mac [Version 16.110 (26061317)] on 18/6/2026, replying to any email no longer includes the original message in the reply window. Prior to the update, replies correctly contained the original email text below my response. Expected behavior: The original message should be included in the reply, as in previous Outlook versions and according to the configured reply settings. Actual behavior: The reply window contains only a blank composition area (or only my response), with none of the original email text included." Obviously this must be a highly frustrating for users as noted by several in that thread. The post, at the time of writing, has also been upvoted by more than 40 users indicating that is a fairly widespread bug. Thankfully Microsoft seems to have acknowledged the problem right around that time as it opened a new issue on its official website. In the support article, the company recommends switching to Outlook for Mac from the legacy app, where the problem appears to be happening.
