TDQuiksilver
I'm currently runnin' off of a DSL connection. I'm using a USB modem (Intel PRO 3200) and I just don't think its livin' up to what it should. My question is... will I get a lil' more speed if I purchase a router instead? But from what I know, you need a broadband modem along with a router, correct? I've already got a integrated NIC in my mobo.. so I've got that part covered. Still a little confused on the whole router deal.. fill me in. Which is better.. keep the USB modem that I have now or purchase a router/broadband modem? dgriner844
Unless you are running more than one computer on the internet, you dont need a router. Unless you are paranoid about security and just want one for the hardware firewall. If your modem is USB you may want to switch it to one that uses an Ethernet connection instead; and since you already have an onboard NIC you would be set (Even though I dont really like using anything that is onboard). TDQuiksilver
but the other question I asked was is it possible that my USB modem isnt really keeping up with my connection? whereas an ethernet modem may be more suited for the job? Security isnt really a problem for me =) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/8585-router-andor-modem/#findComment-62490 Share on other sites
KiwiNZ
I was using an Internal DSL modem for a while and experienced a lot of drop outs , I changed to a Nokia M11 and have littlle problems with drop outs . I have also added 2 further PC's to the home network and the Router is great for that . dgriner844
Theoreticaly your USB should be able to handle the internet connection. but I have have some friends that were pretty dissapointed with USB performance. Not many people I know like the USB connection very much. It is around just so that the cable and DSL companies dont have to buy everyone NIC cards. My cable modem can connect either with USB cable or Ethernet. I use Ethernet, never even tried the USB. Even the cable installer said not to use it unless I had no choice. Of course a lot of those guys are morons, so take his advice with a grain of salt. But I would go switch to an Ethernet device. What type of speeds do you get with your connection? what is your connection rated for? Mike11212
Test your speed. Does it match what your ISP told you it should be Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/8585-router-andor-modem/#findComment-62521 Share on other sites
TDQuiksilver
640 Down... 256 Up... I usually download around 60-70 kbps.. so I'm assuming that's about right. But not I'm talkin' game performance.. doesn't seem to keep up in that like it should. Then again, Im paranoid about tweakin' and like to make sure everything runs at its greatest potential. Sounds like I should get an ethernet adapter eh? What are some good ones to purchase?
