Digital Spy Speaks to Emily!

Have you been recognised a lot since you've appeared on screen?

"Yeah, I have. Mostly, people just whisper - especially when I'm at college! It's worse when I go out with Lily (Loveless, who plays Naomi) - people go crazy! It's quite cool if you've got someone with you because you can share the excitement and it doesn't make you nervous."

Do you think the public have taken well to Emily?

"Well, everyone who has come up to me has been quite nice. I've had no bad experiences, so I think Emily has been received really well, which is cool. I really like her!"

How would you describe her?

"She started out - and always has been - overpowered by her sister. She's really shy and under-confident and she doesn't have many friends - not because she's boring, but because of her sister, Katie. Whenever they meet new people, everyone is attracted to Katie because she's the one in the mini-skirt and she's talkative."

As far as twins go, they are very different...

"The way they've written it is brilliant. Most twin parts you see on TV have them written as best friends, and me and Meg (Katie) find that strange because we don't know any twins who get on that well. Living with someone for nearly 18 years would drive you mad, even if you were good friends. Katie and Emily's relationship is really realistic."

So why is Katie so mean to Emily?

"I think a part of it is that Katie is jealous of all the attention Emily has been getting since all the Naomi stuff came out. And also, I think she's probably secretly worried that everyone will think she's gay just because her sister is! Even though Katie is horrible to Emily, she still needs her. And now that Emily is trying to break away, Katie's scared."

How are things at home for them?

"Their mum and dad are far from perfect, but they're so funny! The dad is a fitness fanatic and runs a business called Fitch Fitness. Their mum is quite protective of them both, but refuses to ever take a side when they argue, which aggravates Emily."

Let's talk Naomi. What's the situation between the girls?

"Emily's gone through this whole emotional struggle with herself. She's questioned whether she's gay and after denying it for a while, she's finally admitted it. I think she's felt better since then, and she's dealt with it. For Naomi, it's a different story - she's still very much questioning herself. She likes Emily a lot, but she's scared because this is a whole new life for her."

Could Emily and Naomi work as a couple?

"Yeah, I think they could. Emily has suffered some harsh rejection from Naomi, and she's really put herself out there. If she can forgive Naomi for the humiliation she made her feel, they could be great together!"

There's quite a lot of nudity - does it bother you to film those scenes?

"Yeah, it does! What's great, though, is that you never have to do anything you're uncomfortable with - even if it's in the script. It was so daunting at the start of the series, but by the end your embarrassment levels get pushed to the absolute max and then further, so you stop feeling embarrassed. it's cool because you end up much more confident and as an actor it's a great first role because you can move on and not be nervous."

A new series has been commissioned - congratulations!

"It's great news. I don't know what's next for Emily but I'm excited to find out. The writers haven't decided yet, but we all had a meeting with them the other day to talk about our characters and where they should go. I can't tell you what was said, but it's really exciting!"

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
