Skins: Channel 4 plans movie spin-off

Channel 4 has confirmed it is planning a movie version of hit E4 teen drama Skins.

The broadcaster said that Film4 and Company Pictures, the independent producer that makes the show, were in "preliminary talks" about a big screen spin-off.

The movie is the latest planned Skins spin-off, with a novel based on the exploits of the group of Bristol teenagers also in the pipeline.

Skins, which won the Bafta people's choice award two weeks ago, will begin filming its fourth series in the summer for broadcast early next year.

The series has become one of E4's biggest hits, pulling in more than 1 million viewers.

Film4 has already had success with a movie with a Skins link, with Dev Patel - who starred in the first two series of the drama - taking a lead role in the Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire.

The Skins movie will hope to follow the success of In the Loop, the movie spin-off of BBC comedy The Thick of It.

Skins Cast Axed After 4th Series

After the first two series of Skins, the producers made the shock decision to axe the entire cast while they were still in their prime (RIP Chris, so long Tony, etc.)

Now, with filming on the fourth series getting underway in Bristol, TT has learned that 'The Gang 2.0' have also been given their marching orders. This will clear the way for another new cast of youths should Skins be recommissioned for its fifth series in 2011.

I guess this could become a regular thing with Skins, see the gang go through two years of college then start over with a new cast.

It?s a shame, I liked the cast of Series 3 much more than the first two series.

Series 3 is currently been shown again, this time on Channel 4 H(Y)Y)

Skins 4 will celebrate the triumph of the teenage spirit in the face of uncertainty and the institutional pressure thrown up by the current cultural/economic climate ? proving that teenagers are not simply drugged-up consumers, but powerful beings whose emotional strength and determination knows no bounds, and who can defeat any obstacle with an emotional purity and honesty lost to the adult world.

In these troubled times, teenagers are our moral and spiritual compass. They hold the world together. This uncertain future belongs to them.

I waited for it this time round, currently enjoying the third series each week on C4H:):)

Wow all getting axed? I can live with that, it was pretty much expected. I will miss the twins though

Will they keep any characters? Like they kept Effy after season 2?

Probably not it seems every 2 series means a brand new cast, but we may see a new person next year from who we get the new group with

MTV has landed the rights to develop a U.S. version of the award-winning U.K. phenomenon "Skins," it was announced today by Liz Gateley, Senior Vice President, MTV Series Development. Created by father and son team, Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain, the E4 and Channel 4 series is about a group of British teenagers who are trying to grow up and find love and happiness. Bryan Elsley will be writing and executive producing the U.S. version.

In an effort to maintain the original production's successful model wherein all the stories were written by a group of British teenagers, MTV will similarly join together unknown teenagers to write and star in the series. The producers intend to set the show in Baltimore, Maryland.

"'Skins' is one of those rare shows that cuts through to its core audience with unusually authentic stories due to the unique writing and casting process that Bryan pioneered. Having personally pursued the U.K. project for almost two years, I am beyond thrilled to bring it to MTV in the U.S. We intend to preserve the authenticity of the British version and are excited to collaborate with the original team to develop stories that will speak to American youth," said Liz Gateley, Senior Vice President, MTV Series Development.

"We are delighted to be making 'Skins' for the U.S. and in particular, for MTV who have embraced the show and its ambitions and unusual production process. We are looking forward to talking to teenagers across the U.S. and making a show that reflects their lives in every aspect," said Charlie Pattinson, CEO, Company Pictures.

"Skins" instantly became a critical and commercial hit in the U.K. especially among young adults as it was the third highest-rated show of the year on E4 reaching 1.2 million P2+ viewers and achieved a massive 61% of 16-34 year olds. The series won a 2009 BAFTA Audience Award, which was voted on by the public, and Best Drama Series at the 2008 Broadcast Awards.

"Skins" will be produced by Company Pictures, a division of ALL3MEDIA, and Stormdog, the same companies that produce the Channel 4 series in the U.K. Bryan Elsley, of Stormdog, will Executive Produce and write the U.S. version, along with Executive Producers Charlie Pattinson and George Faber, both of Company Pictures.

'Skins' plot 'helps gay girls come out'

Lily Loveless and Kathryn Prescott have revealed that gay girls have gained the courage to admit their sexual orientation as a result of Skins.

Loveless and Prescott play lesbian couple Naomi and Emily on the Channel 4 show.

Loveless told The Sun: "People come up to me in clubs and say, 'You made me come out'.

"It's really cool. It's odd because you live in a bubble when you're filming and you forget it's going to go out on TV."

Prescott also commented: "There are young people who are male and coming out, that's really prevalent. But it's not for girls.

"There are a few shows [with lesbians] and they paint it as if it's male-written, like young fantasy lesbians, but this is not like that."

    • Google Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving for OpenAI by Pradeep Viswanathan Noam Shazeer is best known as one of the co-authors of the 2017 “Attention Is All You Need” paper, which introduced the Transformer architecture that now powers most large language models. He also worked on several major Google AI projects, including LaMDA, before leaving the company in 2021 to co-found Character.AI. He also authored the Sparsely-gated Mixture of Experts (2016) paper, which is popular among the AI community. After falling behind OpenAI and Anthropic a couple of years ago, Google brought Shazeer back in 2024 as part of a major deal with Character.AI. Through this deal, along with Noam, several other researchers returned to Google DeepMind. More recently, he was a vice president of engineering at Google and a technical co-lead for Gemini. Today, Noam Shazeer announced on X that he is leaving Google and joining OpenAI. In his post, Shazeer said it was a difficult decision to move on, adding that he was proud of the Google team and what it had built together. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed the move with a post of his own, saying Shazeer was one of the people he had most wanted to work with since OpenAI’s early days. Google has made strong progress with Gemini over the past year, closing the gap with OpenAI in several areas. But losing Noam Shazeer is a major talent setback for them, especially after bringing him back less than two years ago by spending a fortune. For OpenAI, the hire adds one of the industry’s most experienced language model researchers to a team that is already pushing ahead with ChatGPT, Codex, and its next generation of frontier models.
