Cyranthus
I don't know why I seem to be having so much trouble doing this... But I have three partitions (volumes) on a single disk. I deleted one volume and want to move the unused space over to another partition. Im using Disk Management in Windows Vista x64. I deleted the volume I didn't want anymore (so now it is unallocated space), and when I right click on the volume I want to Extend... the option is grayed out. Tried formatting the unallocated space for NTFS... and the option is still grayed out. What do I have to do so I can extend the volume I want with the unallocated space on the same disk? Cyranthus
so further research is telling me that its only able to extend space if the partition is right next to it... which it is not. Why? No idea... So what i have looks like this... ---> Vista partition | XP Partition | Unallocated Space if it had looked like this... ---> Vista Partition | Unallocated Space | XP Partition than I would of been able to do it perfectly... so i guess I need to get a vista 64 bit compatible partitioning software.... either that or delete my XP partition and then reinstall it after I move around the space.... which I kind of dont want to do. Anybody know any GOOD Vista x64 compatible partitioning software? Eric Veteran Posted December 30, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 30, 2009 You can use the trial version of BootIt NG to slide your XP partition to the end of the drive, then Disk Management should be able to expand your Vista partition. farmeunit
I use PartedMagic or GParted for any partition work. They're bootable LiveCDs. Just make sure to Apply the changes when done. +BudMan MVC Posted December 31, 2009 MVC Share Posted December 31, 2009 Or just convert your disk to dynamic -- which then you can extend that partition to that unallocated space. Phantom Helix
If moving the XP partition, one thing I've had happen before is that the moving process can corrupts some files sometimes, it is a good idea to make a partition clone as a backup and put it on another physical drive somewhere. using a defragment program that can consolidate or compact your XP partition prior to moving can help reduce the chance of corruption. Orange Battery
I use PartedMagic or GParted for any partition work. They're bootable LiveCDs. Just make sure to Apply the changes when done. I use these after so many other apps let me down. Slide your XP partition into the free space and then attach you space it left to your Vista partition.
