[Help] Wallpaper previews don't work

Recommended Posts

these are in your home folder correct? do the previews work in finder fine?

also you might have a bad file association for jpeg and/or other image formats

Yes it is in Pictures/Wallpaper. The previews work there.

This is a preff pane app that will allow you to change default app/file associations, not sure if that is whats wrong but we can at least use it to find out

The two tabs we are interested in are extensions and file types

on each tab scroll through the list to .jpeg/.jpg and see what app is associated

ok, have reset your Mac since this happened?

and do you have any apps like, MainMenu or Macpilot? rebuilding your Launch services database might fix it but I don't know how to do it terminal so those Paid apps are all I can think of

I am out of ideas atm, sorry,

can you clear and rebuild your icon database with Onyx?

generally I use iPhoto to catalogue every single image instead of reading them from folders directly, this sometimes happens to me but it is because the library file is on an external drive connected to a hub so it doesn't boot up fast enough sometimes.

ok, lol did you upgrade from 10.5 or clean install 10.6 or was this a machine that had 10.6 already?

The reason I ask is the first 2 times i did the upgrade from 10.5 slowly over time I would encounter various errors like this and could not find help to fix

but when I did a fresh clean install everything has been good for a long time now

Have you tried deleting your desktop preferences ? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?m...91

Or disk utility fix permissions on your system HDD?

also found this process, never knew existed myself lol

I attribute the problem to a corrupted permissions set for my profile/Mac.

First step... Restart your Mac... hold down Shift ... till i say let it go... your mac will boot slowly into a BLUE screen... let go of shift... and it will go into SAFE BOOT... log into your normal profile.

Step Two

Run Disk Utils... Select your HD... and on the left "Repair Permissions"

Go get a coffee... it will take a while.

Once Completed...

Step Three

Select Repair Disk on the RHS... or if it is not lit up to be selected... Check Disk.

Get another Coffee... it will also take a while...

Try removing the folder from that preference pane, and then in Finder copy paste the wallpapers to a new folder. Then in the preference pane again, add that folder.

If that doesn't work, move com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the desktop and then re-open system preferences.

I tried #1. didn't help any. the problem effected any photo folder i was adding.

Ended up just reinstalling OS X.

Hmm i know you fixed it by reinstalling, but maybe did you enable to view hidden files before?

Files beginning with an . are usually hidden and likely contain just metadata - or didn't even normal picture thumbnails (without an .) show up?

Maybe someone who gets the same problem finds this thread.

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
