What's wrong with MSE? You can try Avira. It does very well for a freeware (almost as good as MSE)

I use NIS trial. Never bothered uninstalling it after restoring my notebook to factory settings. :p

Check out this comprehensive test on all of the major league AVs. AV-COMPARATIVES.ORG

i whole heartily disagree with you. IMO avira is the best antivirus out there.

Why is that?

When I last used Avira it had an annoying pop-up ad window whenever it checked for updates.

Now, no matter how good the application is - if it does something like that, it has to go.

I'm currently enjoying COMODO, I'm surprised it's not on the list. It's free, has a pretty nice AntiVirus, easy to use firewall and a heuristics engine (Defense+). COMODO Internet Security Premium is not completely signature based, which means it's much more secure than other Anti-Virus products. It also has a built in Sandbox, which means you don't have to install Sandboxie or any other Sandboxing programs, which is a nice big plus.

I also love Avast for it's features, but it's no good just being signature based. The new interface of Avast 5 is much nicer than the old 'Car Radio' look that Avast used to have.

ESET NOD32 Antivirus. I have only had good experiences with this since I first subscribed around three years ago. Of course, I have tested other products and often recommend Microsoft Security Essentials to friends and family due to being (in my opinion) the best free alternative.

I am a fan of MSE for the fact that it is so simple, install it then ignore it. Avast (from what I understand) you have to register once a year (still free though), and Avira you have that ad popup every update, MSE once its installed is completely transparent until it actually finds something. Which for W7 or Vista with UAC, is great. But MSE on XP has failed on multiple occasion to find a virus. I had 2 clients bring their computer back for me to remove viruses off of, and I had one I was using previously that also got a virus. All while running MSE fully up to date, and all XP SP3 updates that were available at the time.

For XP, MSE just completely blows and offers virtually no protection, for Vista and newer, it works much better and is much more transparent than most other free AVs.

Despite still being relatively new in the competitive field of antivirus software, VIPRE AntiVirus + AntiSpyware comes out swinging this year with what our team of reviewers found to be the lightest-running, best antivirus software for 2010.

The balancing act with antivirus and anti-spyware is managing to be light-running while still providing PC protection.

This is one place where VIPRE delivers on its promise better than any of its competitors.

Our testing consistently showed VIPRE to be among the best performing software in each test we ran.

TOP FEATURES Solid real-time protection

Great resource usageGood email protection

In fact, some of the older better known antivirus programs like McAfee and Norton didn't do nearly as well as VIPRE this year.

In comparison, VIPRE's light resource usage, strong antivirus and antispyware protection, and excellent customer service consistently pushed it to the front of the pack.

We really were impressed from start to finish.

for the past two years it's been avira premium up until the other day when i got one too many false positives for my liking. im currently trying out avast 5 and so far it is really nice and lightweight but powerful. i like the total overhaul they did to the UI as well.

I swore by NOD32, until one day when one of my accounts got compromised. I removed the program and installed Avira which picked up a few viruses, and most alarmingly a nasty looking keylogger. I was lucky because at the time I'd frequently log into poker sites/Neteller where I had thousands of dollars...

A friend who also used NOD32 wasn't so lucky. He had his poker account hijacked and someone played at a few $2000 tables for a few games.

Never gone back to it since. I'm fine with a few bits of malware/cookies sneaking through, but keyloggers? Not good...

MSE + Spybot can't be beaten, in my opinion.

    • Microsoft released new Defender update for Windows 11, 10, Server ISO installations by Sayan Sen Microsoft releases new Windows Defender update packages very frequently to protect against various newly discovered malware. Once a while every three months or so, the company also pushes out these updates to Windows images (WIM and VHD) and ISOs, that are used to install Windows. Hence with the newest Windows 11 update available via the official MCT tool, you should get these definitions. This update package is necessary as a Windows installation image may contain old, outdated anti-malware definitions and software binaries. Aside from better security, these updates can also provide improved performance benefits in some cases. When a new Windows installation is set up, there may be a temporary security risk due to outdated Microsoft Defender protection in the OS installation images. This happens because the antimalware software included in these images might not be up to date. Thus Microsoft says that these updated definitions essentially help close this protection gap. Microsoft delivered the latest security definitions for Windows images via security intelligence update version 1.445.323.0. The Defender package version is also the same. It applies to Windows 11, Windows 10 ESU, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, Win 10 Ent LTSC 2019, Win 10 Ent LTSB 2016, Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016. Microsoft writes: "This package updates the anti-malware client, anti-malware engine, and signature versions in the OS installation images to following versions: Platform version: 4.18.26040.7 Engine version: 1.1.26040.8 Security intelligence version: 1.447.236.0" From Microsoft's security bulletin, we learn that the security intelligence update version 1.447.236.0 was released early last month and adds threat detections for various malware like trojan, backdoor exploits, ransomware, stealers, AutoKMS, and more. For those wondering, the latest intelligence update is version 1.451.297.0 at the time of writing.
    • Hello, Hope all is well. I am in UK.
    • I'm not happy with myself for it, but I've gone and got hold of it. Just another 45 minutes and I'll be Bond, James Bond. In my defence, IO's Hitman series is awesome, and I'm a sucker for 007. So while it might seem a bit simplified compared to Hitman, I'm sure I'll be right at home.
    • Or just check the script yourself ^^. I hate having a Microsoft account tied to my windows install.
