My software reviewed by C|net Download.com editors

Recommended Posts

I'm really happy to announce that my software DiskMax was reviewed by C|net Download.com editors on January 4th, 2010:

http://download.cnet.com/DiskMax/3000-18512_4-10912587.html (4 stars)

And of the 9 user reviews, 8 of them rated it 5 stars and the last gave it 4 stars (he was being balanced :p ).

If any of you are DiskMax users, I give you my deepest thanks!

(Happy New Year btw!)

Just a note about some users below saying that the program history in the start menu does not repopulating if you clear it: It will start repopulating once you restart your computer. If you are too impatient for that, you can just restart explorer.exe using the task manager.

A changelog would be helpful on your site, if it's there I can't find it. I remember coming across DiskMax years ago, at that time it actually screwed up my Windows install, so I only used it that one time. Just tried it again, and it has indeed improved, it found 3.4GB of junk.

Quiet impressed with the amount of junk data this app removed, however I would like to add one comment, so many tweaking programs these days seem to remove prefetch files, which has absolutely no performance benefit at all, in fact for your next few reboots it will actually make your OS boot more slowly, and your applications take more time to load until all the files are regenerated. I do wish authors of these programs would either stop including this "tweak" altogether, or at least provide a warning of the negative impacts, when the program says that it is "optimising" your prefetch files, that gives the user no indication that they are going to be deleted.

Well, it turns out it's screwed my install of Windows, the programs history is not even keeping entries now of what I've used.

EDIT: It also deleted all my compatiability view settings as well.

You can screw your PC up with any program such as this or CCleaner if you remove things that are needed. Use system restore.

Thank you everyone!

I think you are being a little too dramatic about it. It hasn't "screwed" your install of Windows.

1. You were asked by DiskMax whether you wanted to clear your user assist history. The exact words displayed to you were: "Do you want to reset your recently used program history? Selecting Yes is safe but will clear the recently used programs list in your Start Menu." Windows will automatically regenerate the list based on your program usage over time. If it doesn't regenerate after starting up a few programs (and for good measure, restarting windows), it is because you've disabled keeping program history somewhere (a tweaking program perhaps?) and didn't notice it until the list that was previously generated was cleared.

2. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, but if you will notice, clearing your browsing history from Internet Explorer's own Internet Options window will delete your compatibility view settings (please try it out now).

There are two parts to the set of prefetch files. The one that relates to faster boots are never deleted. Only the ones relating to individual applications are. Every once in a long while, deleting the contents of the prefetch folder completely can actually speed up boot (after that one boot where it takes longer while it relearns the load sequence) - DiskMax does not do this for you. I know this goes against what experts around the web advocate but I find from empirical studies that sometimes an unexplained loss of startup speed can be resolved by a quick clearing of the prefetch folder (I am certain of this because every one of my boots are timed).

    • Linus Torvalds releases a pretty ordinary Linux 6.16-rc3 by Paul Hill Linus Torvalds, the head and founder of the Linux kernel, has announced the release of Linux 6.16-rc3. This release comes with fixes for new features that were introduced during the merge window several weeks ago, and for old features where issues have been detected or improvements need to be made. If you remember last week, Torvalds said that rc2 seemed smaller than usual, putting it down to people going on vacation. He said this week’s rc3 seems to be in the usual ballpark for this time of the cycle, so everything looks “entirely normal.” In terms of changes, this release is “dominated” by wireless networking and GPU driver updates, however, Torvalds doesn’t think that anything really huge stands out this time. While nothing stands out Torvalds urged people to carry on testing and submitting patches. This update saw improvements to the core system and architecture. There have been improvements to ARM64 KVM that improve stability and correctness of virtualizations on ARM64. There are also improvements to RISC-V KVM and Trust Domain Extensions (TDX) for Intel which expand and secure virtualization capabilities on those architectures. On the graphics front, there are fixes for the amdgpu and amdkfd drivers that fix job handling, engine resets, display corruption, and power management features. The driver used for Qualcomm’s Adreno GPUs has been updated to improve fault handling, display timing, and driver binding. The open-source Nouveau (Nvidia) driver has been updated with fixes for GSP message queue references, potential integer overflows, buffer size adjustments, and a use-after-free bug. Finally, the Intel i915 driver has been updated to address early wedge issues, memory initializations, and build errors. There are also improvements to Wi-Fi devices (ath12k and iwlwifi), sound (ALSA), power management on AMD, and file system improvements (OverlayFS, EROFS, XFS, NFS, SunRPC). Linux 6.16 is due for release at the end of July and will then be picked up by Linux distributions, which will be the first interaction most end users have with the new features in this update. The main benefit of a newer kernel is that Linux will work on newer hardware, so if you’ve had issues with Linux, be sure to try it periodically in case your hardware is now supported.
