Would you upgrade to a 3D HDTV this year?

It's fun to watch 3d in the cinema but at home, probs not. I don't wear or have ever worn glasses (apart from sunnies when driving) so I find them quite annoying. More like a gimmick more than anything else to be honest. I doubt that many people with continue to watch in 3d after the first week lol. As for pricing goes, I saw on the news today that they start selling at $2000AU which is quite reasonable I think.

NO way, I've watched some recent movies in "3d" at the theater and I find the technology is very poor and gives me a headache after a few minutes... I'm not saying I won't get one ever but the technology will have to get better (no glasses)

I've had my TV for what 3 years or is it 4?

Will be upgraded during the 3D era.

Yes I will want support, Wipeout HD, or Wipeout "whatever" that is released for the PS3 in 3D when I upgrade will blow my mind. Plus there's all the rumours that every PS3 game will work in 3D. Along with Blu Ray (3D movies) I see no reason to ignore the technology, when I do see time to upgrade.

If everyone is raving about Avatar in 3D, if I can get that same experience in my home with my home theatre system screw dressing up to go sit in a cinema with a ton of other people and overpriced food.

But no unlikely this year, I was considering it as my parents want another new HDTV for another room in the house (they'd pay something for mine, I'd pay towards the rest of the new one), but I have the warped tour to pay for this year, probably next year for my new TV, especially as they'll be down in price by then.

Also instead of mid-range which is what I have just now Bravia 40V3000, I want to go for one of the big bad boy XBR's are they called? Look so damn awesome. Size of 40" is fine for me again, it's just the saving up.

3D of today is garbage. Yes its cool but after watching for a period of time it hurts my eyes, the glasses are uncomfortable and they look stupid. Who actually thinks its cool to watch tv with an extra pair of glasses? Who wants their eyes being forced to work unnaturally? I dont. Maybe when they come out with super holographic projector tv's that dont look stuttery or blurry or hurt your eyes I will switch to 3d. I'll stick with my panasonic plasma for now.

I will weight til the prices go down and the quality of the products goes up.

I have a nice HD TV at the moment and works pretty well, but theres a lack of 3D channels at the moment and i will do what i did with SSD's, weight until the prices goes down :D

I will be buying a new TV this year, but part of the impetus is to move away from the dominating 42" we have now, coupled with moving to full HD.

To this end, I will go 1080p, maybe 120hz, but 3d goes against the whole idea of making the TV "less of a feature" in the room.

Hell and no.

this.

I don't see the hype behind 3D at all

I can't believe people are actually considering this. Most TVs now should support 3D already. It is just an optical trick, and an addon module can support 3D no problem.

Not only that, but I cannot believe there is a market for such a thing. It seems quite popular at CES, but in the real world, I just do not see the point.

If you want to downsize and go full HD, then I can highly recommend the LG 37LH5000 currently on offer at Currys http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_...Currys%20Google

It's 200hz, full 1080p, has a USB port, S-video, 2 scarts and 4 HDMI inputs.

I would.. if the Finalize the 3D Spec for Blurays ( display, not just how to save it on the dic ) and TVs.. And if it's a reasonable price..

In other worlds, no, not likely.. not till they fail their first few times..

Intelman.. No, most tv's don't support 3D.. I mean they can do the red/blue glasses trick, but decent 3D like you can see at a theater, most tv's are nowhere near.. Hell for Proper 3D you need 120hz, and most just support 60hz and then just duplicate frames..

Definitely not.

I have seen them first hand at CES this year, and they are "all the rage" here for the big companies.

Here is the problem with 3DTV's..

- you need glasses to watch it (something i dont want to wear while watching tv, games or movies

- You need a compatible device to play 3D, such as a 3D blu-ray player.

- the picture doesn't look good at all angles

- You will need to buy more glasses if you have company coming over

- some glasses require you to charge them.

This is surprising, everyone on neowin seems to think that this is a tech flop and won't be buying into 3D tvs.

Not sure what you mean... by your own first hand experience you seem to be convinced the tech is not where it needs to be for large scale deployment..

I for one am very interested in this because I love the 3d that is in theaters today.. UP, Bloody Valentine, Avatar (havent seen yet)... so if they can duplicate at home with the Real3D glasses, I would prob buy into it.

The problem with 3D is people don't want the glasses.. It really is that simple.. Shutter glasses are very expensive, so better not have a family.. You have to have enough glasses for there ( no friends ) .. Even RealD the problem there is more basic, how many people want to wear glasses while watching tv/movies ? I've found they cause headaches in many people, moreso if you are one of the 50% that already wear glasses..

And as I said before, there is no set standard.. we need everyone, Cable, Broadcasters, TV Manufactures, Blurays, etc to all agree on how it's gonna be done..

3D seems to pop up every so often, everyone goes mad for it and then it vanishes again.

I like the idea of using 3D to enhance the overall experience such as Avatar and UP, but there are still a lot of films like The Final Destination where they purposely have sequences woth things swinginig out at you. I find that a waste of what it could do.

As everyone has said, get rid of the need for glasses and I'll be interested long term.

I personally don't believe that they are going to ship units in mass quantities, or that the sales of 3DTV's won't be where the market predicts them to be.

I think the technology is nice and all, but it needs some fine tuning and needs a market. I believe 3D isn't fully ready yet for the market, and they are just pushing more gimmick products on us.

    • Nah. They'll milk the current generation in terms of design - controllers, consoles, but no meaningful hardware improvements. This is one reason why people aren't buying Xbox hardware - it's stagnant.
    • Funny, but I didn't had the issue. All PC's at work are Dell and we had the culprit version of Support Assist for about 2 weeks until we got the new one. No problem at all. And for checking you can also use Dell Command Update, no need to search in windows settings. Just check the Upgrade History.
    • YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Apple are scared of their customers! They have built a brand over the years of "it just works out of the box", but that slows innovation. Samsung's master stroke was the Galaxy Ultra: "Let's cram everything into one handset, make it so stupid only real nerds will love it, some of the features will work, some won't, but the audience will have such a high tolerance they won't care". Apple has no such device and so they are constantly worrying these days about the fallout of creating a new experience that customers might not like. I know it is often cited the reason they don't build a touchscreen Mac Book is they don't want to cannibalise the the iPad market, but I think it's equally cold feet after the criticism Microsoft receive trying to make a touch compatible desktop OS
