Version 0.7 is now released!

Version 0.7

released on February 3, 2010

  • NEW Introduced dual mode. Activation: double-click on tab or press CMD+U. Pane switching with TAB. (more).
  • NEW Custom crash reporting dialog based on Breakpad project (more).
  • NEW Rapid closure mode for tabs (issue).
  • FIXED Stuck hover states on close buttons (more).
  • FIXED Solved problem when Preferences windows appears in lower-left corner when first activated.
  • FIXED Back-ported fix for occasional crash when tab is closed (commit).
  • FIXED Fixed annoying bug when bottom status bar was not updated when switching views (issue).
  • FIXED Plugging/Unplugging external monitor breaks windows (issue).
  • IMPROVED General refactoring, stability and speed improvements.
  • IMPROVED Updated Sparkle to latest GitHub version.
  • IMPROVED Tab context menu shows also when CMD+left click or CTRL+left click.
  • IMPROVED Force dot files to appear always on top (when in folders-on-top mode).
  • IMPROVED Window resizing.
  • IMPROVED Tab animations.
  • IMPROVED Disabled Finder window animations. This should fix Time Machine quirks (issue)
  • IMPROVED Installer re-enables Echelon after installation in case it was previously enabled.

I hope Finder animations come back in a later build... It's one of the things I like about Snow Leopard.

Also, does 0.7 now support spring-loaded tabs so I can actually move files between tabbed Finder windows, like I can with Path Finder or ForkLift?

Funny you should say that...

The "animations" in Snow Leopard are very minor, though. They're aren't 3d or overly flashy...

I think there's a big difference between obvious eye candy and minor animations that are barely noticeable.

  • 2 weeks later...

I believe the animations are back, but still no dragging between tabs.

I'm a little behind this time.

Version 0.7.1

released on February 10, 2010

  • NEW Added options to restart Finder and uninstall TotalFinder into status menu item.
  • FIXED Fixed .DS_Store related crash.
  • FIXED Fixed crash when TotalFinder was trying to return focus to app which ceased to exist during Visor session.
  • FIXED Fixed rare crash during Visor window sliding.
  • FIXED Fixed crash related to external apple events.
  • FIXED Fixed visual glitches when hiding toolbar or changing its type.
  • FIXED Bottom PathBar works again.
  • FIXED Visor window in freeform mode is resizable again.
  • FIXED Screen selector works again in Visor Preferences.
  • IMPROVED Tab opening and closing animations are smooth again.
  • IMPROVED Don't close existing windows on start, but adopt them as tabs.
  • IMPROVED Visor window respects the Dock.
  • IMPROVED Visor window shows reliably on top of the Dock when "Show on Dock level" is enabled.
  • IMPROVED Better Visor sliding. Works fading and also solved stuck Visor window under the Dock.

I really hope tab-to-tab dragging comes soon. I mean, that's pretty much the main reason I'm even interested in this one. It would essentially give me the functionality of Path Finder/ForkLift but without the third-party requirement.

For me, the perfect Finder replacement would be if ForkLift could just completely replace Finder altogether.

From what I know nobody here mentioned 3D and/or "over flashy" eye candy.

Seems like things have died down on his progress. Hopefully he is planning something good, soon. I haven't used it in a while, but keep checking for updates.

It needs spring-loaded tabs.

Honestly, I just wish Apple would by out the developers of ForkLift and/or Path Finder and call either one of those the new Finder. TotalFinder has the advantage of not requiring another application, but development is far behind ForkLift, which has spring-loaded tabs, a dual-pane interface, a built-in uninstaller, FTP, etc.

IMO both PathFinder and Forklift have a pretty horrible interface compared to the Finder. It's my belief that 99% of the users out there simply don't have the need for the advanced options the applications offer. Beyond an AppZapper-like solution (or manage prefs and such like the iPhone does) and maybe tabs I have no need for it either.

Also, why would Apple need to buy them out? They're more than capable of bringing those features to the Finder themselves if they wanted to.

Also, why would Apple need to buy them out? They're more than capable of bringing those features to the Finder themselves if they wanted to.

I know they could, and they probably will bring some improvements to the Finder in the future, it's just that they have a history of often buying out developers and then integrating their products into the OS. Back in the early 90s, they bought off some Berkeley software developers who were working on a product that ultimately became System 6's MultiFinder. And then several years ago, they bought out the developers of CoverStream, which later became Cover Flow.

I tried this out on my mac before i had to re-install and came across alot of problems with the finder becoming un-responsive and having to kill it via the terminal. While this is still in Alpha i think i will keep it away from my production machine. However this is a brilliant app with LOADS of potential, def one to keep your eye on.

You never know it might get swollowed up by Apple like Jonathan del Strother of Coverflow did.

Here is some info on what he may charge, whenever he does decide to charge

http://getsatisfacti..._totalfinder_be

First I'm going to build a great product then I'll try to think about making money of it.

Personally I would think $15 is a fair price. Because I would probably get $10 into my pocket after taxes and merchant fees. But did no research on it yet.

As of licensing I'd like to use dual license:

1) per-user = use it on as many machines you want while you are the only user using this license of TotalFinder

2) per-machine = use it on one machine, unlimited number of users

I just found this, and it actually seems somewhat fair. I'm sure I will buy it once it comes out, so long as he keeps it updated if/when an Apple update breaks the functionality.

    • So how did you solve the problem? Disabling Secure Boot isn’t a solution.
    • Another devilish issue surrounding these certificates is what can happen with old, unsuspecting PCs that nevertheless have Secure Boot enabled. In my case, it was a Dell with a 3rd-gen Core chip (so about 13 years old). As of the last few weeks, it was suddenly BSOD'g within about 5 minutes of booting. Turns out it was because of MS's "Secure-Boot-Update" scheduled task, which is scheduled to run 5 minutes after login. It's explained in gory detail here (this is not my post, but it was where I found the answer), but the short version is that this legacy system would need fairly elaborate, manual certificate intervention since MS's automatic cert update method cannot work. How to do that is linked late in the thread. https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...od-caused-by-scheduled-task Secure Boot wasn't at all important for this particular PC, so I disabled it to be done with the problem.

App-local UI zoom — press Ctrl +/-/0 or use Ctrl+MouseWheel to scale the whole app, just like a browser. New External Apps: EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Rockstar Games Launcher, PowerShell, and Helium Browser. Bug Fixes Layouts no longer clip when the Windows text size slider is set above 100%. Accessibility: Narrator now announces setting names on toggles and dropdowns, previously unlabeled buttons are labeled, and progress updates are announced. Silent updates now respect your custom install location instead of reverting to the default. Cancel in Review Mode no longer clears your app selections. OneNote is now detected correctly for Win32 Click-to-Run installs. Clean Start Menu applies more reliably by also writing the group policy path. WinGet errors are no longer silent — error details now show in the terminal output. Fixed a startup crash on older Windows builds caused by a .NET runtime regression. Config import now converts power setting values correctly and no longer re-applies an already-active power plan. Improvements App icons load noticeably faster and cover almost everything now, including legacy capabilities and optional features — they come from a dedicated, checksum-validated icon repository and are fetched in parallel. Software & Apps polish: per-icon tooltips, extra table columns, an app sort dropdown, relocated search, and a cleaner compact view. A warning now appears when the Connected Devices Platform Service is set to Manual or Disabled, since some Windows features depend on it.
