Which Laptop is the better deal?

Recommended Posts

Of those 2 i say definitely the Acer. It's lighter, better CPU - longer battery life. If you are going to try to play games on it then the Toshiba would be better as it has a ATI card versus the Intel one. If you are getting a laptop to be a mobile PC tho then definitely get the Acer.

Since i'm not in Canada, i don't know what prices are like for you guys so i'll leave that part to other Canadians.

thanks. i may not even use it for games. maybe just nba 2k10 but that's its. i'd use the laptop for mainly web browsing, watching videos and listening to music. and it has to be able to multi-task without any lag while doing the aforementioned tasks.

I'm not entirely sure how the "newly improved" Integrated Intel Graphics will perform in games. But the ATi card should be able to handle itself in games. Just don't expect to be playing on high settings without lagging. Having said that. It's a tough choice. The Core i3 sounds like a great processor, but the AMD one is pretty good as well. I've set up a few of these while I was working at Futureshop and setup process and speed of the computer was pretty fast.

If you are planning on using this without having it plugged into a wall most of the time, then the Acer would be better. For gaming the Toshiba's graphics card would be better. So it's depends on your usage. Toshiba's a good brand, at least better than Acers.

Go with the Toshiba. I would also advise getting the Protected Service Plan of 2 years. It covers alot more than the 1 year manufacture warranty. Just remember, if you don't get the set up from either Futureshop of Best Buy. The first time you boot up your machine might take a while for windows to complete it's set up. Generally it takes about 30 minutes for the set up to complete. And don't forget to get rid of all the trial software the moment you get the chance to, Especially the Trial version of Norton Internet Security 2009/2010. It's a shame theres no Toshiba laptop running Core i3. The i5 version is $1399.. :s

Acer is better slightly due to newer CPU and better video memory (128MB vs 64MB). Even though its only shared graphics, at that level 128MB will help a lot. As far as "snappiness in Windows", both are as good as each other, but the Acer has a slight edge imho.

I particularly don't like Acer for the fact of cheap components and lousy support. Acer will make you pay for shipping in for repairs. I've heard bad things about MSI build quality. I don't know if this is something that you'd like http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220637. I own an Asus G51vx and I love it although it is a bit out of your price range that you're looking for.

I am probably going to go for the Toshiba. i have some concerns about it though. will it lag if, let's say, I were to have 4-5 firefox tabs open, 1 being a video playing on Youtube while talking on MSN and downloading something all at the same time?

i don't know anything about the processor Toshiba has. Is it a better processor than an Intel T6600 or even a T4400?

You should be fine. If I can do that on a netbook running Intel's Atom processor without suffering any lagging issues. It should work on a regular size laptop without any problems. You machine has 4GBs of RAM and an AMD Processor, it should be capable of HD video playback without any issue

    • It's about to become harder to turn off your Samsung TV, thanks to Instagram by Aditya Tiwari Meta announced that its Instagram for TV app has arrived on Samsung TVs in the US as part of its latest expansion, giving users one more way to scroll through Reels. The social media giant often comes under scrutiny for the "addictiveness" of its features, which leads people to spend excessive time on the platform. Interestingly, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri described spending 16 hours on the platform as "problematic use" but not "clinical addiction." Mosseri also compared scrolling on Instagram to binge-watching a show on Netflix. Instagram for TV is now available on Samsung TV models released in 2020 or later. The app is already available on Amazon Fire TV and Google TV in the US, which together account for the majority of connected TV devices. The company said it will test several new features to improve the living room and family experience while using Instagram on the big screen. Watching vertical videos on a big screen isn't something many would be excited about. Probably that's why Meta is testing a dedicated home for horizontal videos. Creators will get the opportunity to design content for TV screens and get more ways to reach audiences, according to Meta. If you found an interesting Reel while doomscrolling on your phone, you'll be able to cast it to your TV. The feature is available for testing on Instagram for TV on Google TV and Amazon Fire TV, and it will also support videos from the Saved tab. Instagram for TV will be testing Channels organized around user interests, across genres such as comedy and sports, as well as content from favorite creators. Moreover, you can watch Stories on your TV. While Instagram is known for short-form videos, it's knocking on more doors to keep the audience hooked. The company said it's exploring new content formats for the big screen, including long-form creator content to cover topics in detail, episodic series to build suspense across multiple episodes, and creator live sessions on TV. All of the new updates put Instagram in competition with established giants like YouTube (and Netflix), which already have a robust presence on the big screen. In recent updates, Instagram added the ability to write an individual caption for each carousel image, manually re-order posts, and a paid version of the app.
    • I know RAM and storage prices are high right now, but I think it would have been better to have 1TB as the base level storage, especially as it's supposed to be for gaming. Plus a 2.5gbe ethernet port rather than only 1gbe.
    • I have installed the debloated version of Windows 11 25H2 Pro. I obtained the apps from store.rg-adguard.net. The size of the Photos app window is quite problematic for me; it consistently displays in a 16:9 aspect ratio, resembling a movie theatre screen, and cant remeber its last size and position. The Snipping Tool cannot capture the taskbar. When I select "Window" in capture mode, it allows me to capture menus or individual windows, but I am unable to capture just the taskbar. This functionality was available in version 24! I am on the same version numbers (latesst).
    • I'm already seeing my steam library, still swallowing the 16 Gb of RAM, then looking at the SD storage expansion and saying "what?".
