Roger H. Veteran Posted January 23, 2010 Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2010 Of those 2 i say definitely the Acer. It's lighter, better CPU - longer battery life. If you are going to try to play games on it then the Toshiba would be better as it has a ATI card versus the Intel one. If you are getting a laptop to be a mobile PC tho then definitely get the Acer. Since i'm not in Canada, i don't know what prices are like for you guys so i'll leave that part to other Canadians. Espada04
I'm not entirely sure how the "newly improved" Integrated Intel Graphics will perform in games. But the ATi card should be able to handle itself in games. Just don't expect to be playing on high settings without lagging. Having said that. It's a tough choice. The Core i3 sounds like a great processor, but the AMD one is pretty good as well. I've set up a few of these while I was working at Futureshop and setup process and speed of the computer was pretty fast. If you are planning on using this without having it plugged into a wall most of the time, then the Acer would be better. For gaming the Toshiba's graphics card would be better. So it's depends on your usage. Toshiba's a good brand, at least better than Acers. Go with the Toshiba. I would also advise getting the Protected Service Plan of 2 years. It covers alot more than the 1 year manufacture warranty. Just remember, if you don't get the set up from either Futureshop of Best Buy. The first time you boot up your machine might take a while for windows to complete it's set up. Generally it takes about 30 minutes for the set up to complete. And don't forget to get rid of all the trial software the moment you get the chance to, Especially the Trial version of Norton Internet Security 2009/2010. It's a shame theres no Toshiba laptop running Core i3. The i5 version is $1399.. :s Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/867798-which-laptop-is-the-better-deal/#findComment-592142432 Share on other sites

pasty2k2
Acer is better slightly due to newer CPU and better video memory (128MB vs 64MB). Even though its only shared graphics, at that level 128MB will help a lot. As far as "snappiness in Windows", both are as good as each other, but the Acer has a slight edge imho. gnuman
I particularly don't like Acer for the fact of cheap components and lousy support. Acer will make you pay for shipping in for repairs. I've heard bad things about MSI build quality. I don't know if this is something that you'd like http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220637. I own an Asus G51vx and I love it although it is a bit out of your price range that you're looking for. Growled Member Posted January 23, 2010 Member Share Posted January 23, 2010 Get the Toshiba with the ATI card if you plan on doing any gaming of any kind. I've never had any luck with any Intel card for that. Loso
I am probably going to go for the Toshiba. i have some concerns about it though. will it lag if, let's say, I were to have 4-5 firefox tabs open, 1 being a video playing on Youtube while talking on MSN and downloading something all at the same time? i don't know anything about the processor Toshiba has. Is it a better processor than an Intel T6600 or even a T4400? Espada04
You should be fine. If I can do that on a netbook running Intel's Atom processor without suffering any lagging issues. It should work on a regular size laptop without any problems. You machine has 4GBs of RAM and an AMD Processor, it should be capable of HD video playback without any issue Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/867798-which-laptop-is-the-better-deal/#findComment-592144678 Share on other sites
Loso
is the Athlon2 Dual Core M320 2.1GHz better or worse than some of the other dual core laptop processors such as the T4400 or T660? Evolution
I'd advise against buying the laptops from futureshop or bestbuy.... just buy them directly from the source or at least a store that doesn't screw you over when problems occur. PhillAholic
I have to second what gnuman said about Acer's build quality. The Only time I ever used a Toshiba laptop was during the P4 days, which I'll give them a pass because all of those overheated and had problems. Inertia
The Acer is better value (as they always are) but the tosh is more solid, better and tougher build quality. sonys are usualy pretty bad value for money.
