Microsoft Windows Live Sync

I tried using it, and used it for a few weeks. I finally uninstalled this garbage. Here's what I had against it:

  • I noticed hundreds of new files in my Documents folder as duplicates. When the files are not similar enough, it will copy the new file over and put your e-mail address after it. So basically I had something.doc and something nightwind_hawk@...com.doc - and both of these documents were switched on each computer!!!
  • It would sometimes go CRAZY WITH CPU and Memory. Even when my other computer wasn't on.... I'd notice my computer would be lagging and I'd look at task manager and Windows Live Sync would be using ~80 CPU. Killed my laptop battery! and this was when my other computer was shut off...

So in conclusion, the idea of it was great but it seems to be as trashy and bloated as the other Windows Live products. Try allway sync, or if you don't have more than 2 GB, dropbox is cloud storage which works wonderful.

I find Windows Live Sync to be VERY useful. Currently, my dad syncs the family laptop with his desktop so that his Microsoft Access program can be worked on with both computers and I sync the laptop to my computer so I can have the same pictures on both computers. I recently started filming a trailer for a mod I am working with and we are managing the film we get through Windows Live Sync. That way, whenever we want to send something, we just put it in the synced folder and we can sync it with 5 different people. I also use it for robotics to so that we can work on Labview projects on our laptops, and then sync it to the netbook which will be the base driver station for the robot. All in all I find Live Sync, very effective and useful. If you want to sync with the cloud before you sync with another computer though, I would recommend Windows Live Mesh.

Unlike Nightwind, I haven't had any issues with CPU or Memory Usage though. Right now it is using 3.4 MB of RAM, and no CPU.

Has anyone ever used Microsoft Windows Live Sync? I have a netbook and PC desktop which should be synced almost continuously. Can I use this application and would you advice it?

Thanks in advance,

W.

Instead of Windows Live Sync try Windows Live Mesh http://www.mesh.com it does exactly the same thing and allows you to keep files and folders synchronised across multiple computers and the cloud.

Its really easy to use and adding/removing folders is no problem, I've been using it for well over a year and haven't experienced any issues.

Life Mesh works very similarly to Live Sync, but you have to remember that all the files you sync have to go through the internet before it goes to the computer you are syncing with. Windows Live Sync works simply over LAN, which means you will have a faster transfer rate.
