John Terry Stripped of England Captaincy / Ferdinand Replaces Him

Recommended Posts

Sky News sources understand John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy following allegations over his private life.

Terry's future as skipper of his country has been the subject of intense speculation ever since allegations emerged that he had an affair with England team-mate Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend.

The Chelsea star met with England coach Fabio Capello at Wembley on Friday afternoon to discuss his future as captain in the wake of the allegations.

There have been calls for Terry to lose the captaincy from sections of the media as it has been claimed more revelations are set to be exposed.

The Football Association made it clear Capello alone will decide Terry's fate and it appears the Italian has decided to take the armband off the 29-year-old, although there is no official confirmation as yet.

Capello was aware the matter needed to be dealt with prior to his departure for Warsaw on Saturday ahead of Sunday's Euro 2012 draw and reports suggest the meeting only lasted 12 minutes as Capello delivered the bad news to Terry

Terry has received support from Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti with the Italian claiming it was business as usual for the club captain in training ahead of Sunday's clash with Arsenal.

If news of Terry losing the captaincy is confirmed it throws England's plans for the World Cup into disarray with Capello now forced to look for a new captain for this summer's tournament in South Africa.

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney have all been mentioned as possible replacements to Terry as captain as Capello considers his options over who should succeed Terry.

England Manager Fabio Capello today issued the following statement:

?After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry.

?As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad.

?What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice.

?John Terry was notified first.

?When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision.

?I would like to take this opportunity to thank The FA, particularly Lord David Triesman and Ian Watmore for allowing me to make this decision in my own time and in the best interest of the team.?

Was she worth it?...

Well Even though he lost his captaincy, I bet his willy was real happy ;) Plus other than that, no harm done, he is still in the team. Now as to the psycological issues that may be raised in between the two team mates and how it affects the team, that's the real issue.

I believe Capello made the right decision. While Terry may be good enough for Ancelotti as a Chelsea captain, when it comes to England captaincy it's a much bigger responsibility. I hope we don't get people saying things along the lines of "his private life should have nothing to do with his performance on the field and as a captain" as that's a horse that has been dead for a long time...

Captaincy will go to Rooney. He has rallied players around him as much as Cesc Fabregas has for Arsenal. Though Gerrard and Rio F are possible candidates too.

Yeah my vote would be Rooney

Unfortunately we are running out of players who could Captain the England side who hasn't done anything stupid in their personal lives.

Rio (Drug cheat who did a runner the day he was meant to be tested)

Gerrard (We've all seen the video and how he got away with beating up that guy on a nite out all because of something to do with music or something like that)

Rooney (well we all know what he is into)

Ashley Cole (doesn't need mentioning)

Anyone want to add to this?

Rio Ferdinand will succeed John Terry as England captain and will lead the national side in the World Cup this summer, it can be revealed.

The Manchester United defender had been Capello's vice-captain and will take over the skipper's armband following Terry's alleged affair with Wayne Bridge's former partner.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard will become vice-captain, and Capello said: "When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision."

For Ferdinand, the promotion completes a remarkable rise in his international career.

In 2003, Ferdinand was banned for eight months for missing a drugs test and missed Euro 2004 - ironically being replaced by Terry in the England team for the tournament.

Ferdinand made his England debut as far back as 1997 against Cameroon when, at 19, he was the youngest defender to have been capped. He went on to play in the 2002 World Cup - where he was named in the team of the tournament - and in 2006.

The 31-year-old from Peckham in London has been plagued by a back problem for the last 18 months but has recently returned to the United side after a three-month lay-off and so far the injury has not returned.

Ferdinand previously described it as "an honour" to have captained England in Capello's second game in charge, against France in March 2008.

Ferdinand said then: "As a kid you grow up wanting to play for England and lead your country out and I've been given that honour of being able to fulfil those dreams."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson last season described him as "now the best centre-half in the world by far".

I'm glad that Terry was removed from the captaincy. What he did (and we all know he has done before to be honest) indicates a man of low morale fibre.

But you're right, the current crop of England footballers seem to be scum, or at least have questionable morals. My vote would go to Lampard personally, although it will be Rio as Capello has stated.

I'd tap that!

@wolfman, what's rooney into :s ( sorry more of a italian soccer fan )

if I remember he was into old women like 50 year olds...I might be wrong though

The difference with Rooney is that he was 18/19 at the time. I.e. Still growing up. We all do stupid things when we're young (granted not with 50 year old hookers though!). Terry however is an adult and a senior member of the squad. And this stuff has been going on with Terry for the last 5 years, at least.

But there's nothing wrong with MILFS :p

on topic, I wonder what his teammate has to say about still having to play with him ?

While I don't fully agree with this decision it is crystal clear that JT brought it to himself. As for replacement Ferdinand gets my vote and either Rooney or Lamps as Vice captain.

It sad though that tabloids have that much power over the FA and the manager.

JT should retire now to make it easier for himself and Bridge. He will still be booed until the press finds a new enemy.

Footballers are seen as role models to a lot of people in this country, I feel Capello has done the right thing, but I am not really sure that giving the captaincy from a sex case to a druggy is really the right way forward, but the truth is that there aren't a lot of other good candidates.

I went to see what the story was about and it seems Google knows the truth!

    • Thanks for liking it! 😊 That's Arch Linux with Gnome.
    • LOL. Can't even quote and edit a comment correctly. Figures you're a Linux user.
    • It won't perform hugely better than the 3080 unless you're VRAM limited in games. Have you tried putting new thermal pads on them 3080 and giving it a good clean to see if you can regain your temps and overclock?
