Silicon Image 3114 RAID creation failures

Just got a silicon image sil3114 based PCI raid card, which works all the time except when creating a new raid group.

Using 4 drives in a raid 5 configuration, it gets to around 14% but then drives 1, 2 and 3 "disconnect", so the raid fails. This has happened 3 times now, exactly the same results.

All drivers and raid card bios us upto date, i dont know what else could be wrong?

Anyone got ideas or solutions? Thanks!

are the wires in good condition? ... when it fails can you see a log of some sort or error (maybe a drive is busted) ...

I've lost the error now, so i cant get an exact copy, but it basically said the disks were disconected, its always the same 3 and the one in port 0 is always fine. I'll try switching them around to see if it's the drives or the card, or the cables. Although the drives have been working fine off the motherboards RAID for a while.
