Civilization V becomes a reality

www.civilization5.com

I know my first thoughts...One...More...Turn...

"Sid Meier's Civilization franchise returns this fall with a fifth installment, featuring hexagon tile maps, a new combat system, deeper diplomatic options, and a community hub where players can share content and compete without leaving the game.

Civilization marches on relentlessly in the fifth installment of the classic strategy series, published by 2K Games and developed by the team at Firaxis. Civilization V features a completely new game engine, allowing for lush, organic landscapes unlike anything seen in the series previously.

With the new engine comes a new combat system, which might separate the casual Civ player from the hardcore. The new hexagon tiles scream war gaming to me, and that's not traditionally a genre for the stay-at-home mom. The new system promises more strategic options in battle, with new elements such as ranged bombardment sure to make combat much more interesting than it has been in the past.

More peaceful players should be pleased by the inclusion of fully animated leaders and deeper diplomatic options, while players seeking online interaction need look no further than the game's player hub, where community-created content can be swapped and multiplayer matches launched.

"Each new version of Civilization presents exciting challenges for our team," said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. "Thankfully, ideas on how to bring new and fun experiences to Civ players never seem to stop flowing. From fully animated leaders and realistic landscapes, new combat tactics, expanded diplomacy and shared mods, we're excited for players to see the new vision our team at Firaxis has brought to the series."

It sounds rather intense, but what of the more casual Civ players?

"In addition to Civilization V, Firaxis Games is also currently developing Sid Meier's Civilization Network, a Civ game for Facebook. With Sid Meier leading design, Civilization Network will offer yet another option for world domination to both the casual gamer and the biggest fans of the series. It's another way to access the famously addictive world of Civilization."

It looks like Firaxis is going in two different directions with the Civilization franchise. Which side will you be on?" - Kotaku

Is this one of those turn based games?

This is pretty much the turn based game. It's a nice change from RTS to be honest (not that I don't like a good RTS), enhancing tactical decisions against either AI or other players. Really looking forward to this addition to the series after falling in love with Civ4. This type of game can literaly extend to weeks or even months, I know I've spent a fair few nights LAN'ing Civ4 to death.

I played the original Civ when it first came out. I loved Civ II and still consider it one of the greatest games of all time.

I never had time to get into Civ III or IV. I hope, with all the changes through III - V, that it will still be accessible to me. I want to give it a try again.

Is this an online game as well?

Going from civ 3 to 4 was easy. Relatively low learning curve. Hopefully that will translate over to civ 5. I tried to get into other strategy games, but I hated how different combat and interface was from civ 3 and 4. Empire total war comes to mind. Just give me an earth map with civs in their acutal starting places and I'm set. Has anyone ever finished a game by domination? (being the only civ left) I have like 4 or 5 save games were it's down to just three civs but haven't finished a one.

You might want to take a look at the review ^.^ but yes the game is online as well. It will also have LAN capability and a 'hotseat' function that allows people to slot themselves into an AI's place from any point in the game, meaning your friend can join an already existing game online or you can simply switch sides yourself.

I am retarded. I did read the review, and for whatever reason, didn't catch that the first time. blush.gif Just slap me silly.

No prob, if you're not familiar with either Civilization games or turn based games then it can be a little confusing.

Good news! hex map blocks makes it interesting.

Yeah I thought the hex map would be kinda cool - 6 sides of vulnerability for my enemies! Mwa ha ha ha

In Civ as it is now, you can attach diagonally, so right now there are 8...

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
