Android vs Windows Mobile

Recommended Posts

I've been a Windows Mobile user (my phone is HTC Touch Pro 2) but wondering why there are many people like using Android? This is not a thread for bashing, but I'm curious. It's because there is a hack to dual boot my phone to Android but I don't see why I would want to boot my phone to Android O/S... to me it seems like (correct me if I'm wrong):

- It requires mostly an internet connection to fully make use of the Android apps (I've only been given free 250 MB on my mobile contract)

- The UI is not as exciting as Windows Mobile with HTC Sense UI

Would appreciate your opinion especially if you move from Windows Mobile to Android to share your experience

I have Android dual booting on my HTC Touch Diamond, and all I can say is, the port is nowhere near finished yet - It is nice and smooth, and fun to play with, but it eats the battery, a few features such as Bluetooth and Camera, GPS etc arent working yet and your right, the UI is not as exciting, it seems to lack the features WM6.5 has, and the button placement is screwed -

Yes it is an interesting project which I am following, and each new build released I am installing and playing with, but it is nowhere near ready to use as a primary OS for the phone

I finally jumped the ship. I've had a winmo (HTC Tilt) for about 2 years! I got an HTC Hero running Android 1.6 and I have to say I am really impressed. In short, I would say the following are the biggies in Android which won't let me go back to a winmo anytime soon:

-> the OS is way cleaner than winmo - the interface is much more intuitive

-> very finger friendly (though I had tons of skins on my winmo to make it finger friendly)

-> the app market has matured very fast giving me sh*t loads of free and very useful apps while winmo market is eons behind

-> the OS feels very snappy. Gone are the days when my winmo would either crash or take a long time to open some heavy app

-> Lastly, being a really heavy google user, it makes sense to be on Android as the native google apps are tied in very well in my Hero :)

Of course, these are all my opinions about android and may not apply all winmo or android users.

Exactly what this guy said. Except I had a HTC Touch Pro and went to the HTC Hero and I gotta say, I am even more pleased with my phone now.

im using the Palm pre.....i know :( ........being dependant on MSN services (hotmail, messenger etc) it seems the only choice i have is to go back to Windows mobile...

or jump ship to android (using some free apps).

should be fun to compare to the new windows series phone thing with android

Having gone from the HTC Tytn II to the HTC Hero, the biggest plus was to not have to use a Stylus on the touchscreen. + all the benifits Bluezz stated

Although I have to say that since the Hero is stuck on 1.5 for the moment it can be a bit unstable. Spotify in particular causes it to crash on a regular basis. Can't wait for the upgrade to 2.1

I really like my Android phone.

esp. the Google integration (since my neowin email account is handled by Google). I'm on 1.6 so I'm using Touchdown (perfect program) to connect to my work Exchange server.

I jumped the google ship and deleted my Google account. Out of curiosity I booted Android 2.01 on my SE Xperia (WM6.5 Device). Ran great, Wifi/bluetooth/3G and so on all works, but it's very strongly tied into a Google account. If you don't have a google account, you can for example, not even open the Calendar application (zero provision made for a local, device only calendar, or third party calendars such as Exchange, ICS and so on). If you're on the google bandwagon, and a lot of people are, it's great, but it's pretty much useless for anyone existing outside the Google ecosystem.

You don't really need more than 250MB. You will be a little restricted, but it really depends on what you want to do. Stick to wifi wherever you can, turn off data when you don't need it...and install 3G Watchdog which will warn you when you get near your allowance.

I don't know why you think most android apps require the internet :s Those apps that do need internet won't use up much of your allowance, and you can switch things off anyway.

+1

I've got 500 Meg data plan with Rogers. I can bump my plan but would cost me muchos $$. When at home, I always jump on wifi and at work I turn on 3G from time to time to check email or when I need to use internet apps (google maps, yelp etc.)

Yeah, welcome to Australia where we don't even get a Free WiFi on our airport :(

There are only a few places in the city where you can get a free WiFi (Melbourne)

Well that's the same here in the UK lol...it's not like we get free wifi everywhere either.

Seriously, whilst you're right that the internet is important, that's true of any smartphone, not just those that use Android! You just need to switch things off when you don't need them and you'll be fine!

BlackBerry has very good integration with MSN and Hotmail. Rock solid on my Bold 9700.
