Thinking of Getting a PS3..

Recommended Posts

Im thinking of getting a PlayStation 3, i mean, there zero way im getting a Xbox 360, simply because its lifespan is nearing its end, meanwhile the PS3 i *hope* will last a good while longer.

Im just wondering -

How much should i save up for to get the console and such? Im thinking of getting it pre-owned, but not visually scratched and stuff. Ebay ftw i guess.

Which games are the best to get? I might get a ton of them in a pack on eBay or something, but i want to know which games are the "must-haves".

What kind of broadband connection do you need for online play?

How would i go about connecting it up to a monitor to play it via that?

How can i play PS2 games on the PS3?

Personally i would probably save up ?250 .. is that enough?

Well I think your reasoning for buying one seems to be misinformed, the 360 is nowhere near the end of it's lifecycle.

The price depends on the model you plan to get. Talking that you want to be able to play your PS2 games on it means you are limited to 2 different early models that are still holding their price quite well. So you probably wouldn't get too much change from the ?250 itself. My opinion, keep your actual PS2 and get a later model PS3 something like the 80 gig or a cheap 120 gig Slim if you can find it.

Going from you saying you won't get a 360 we can include multiplatform I guess. In terms of exclusives though (Older) Metal Gear Solid , LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, InFamous, Uncharted 1. All those are now considered Platinum releases so should be quite cheap. (Newer) Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, Uncharted 2. (PSN) Flower, Wipeout HD

Online play then I believe 2 meg speed is recommended. Not too sure on that.

Monitor connection, HDMI out so if your monitor has that you are fine, else you will need with HDMI to DVi or HDMI to VGA adaptors and also a way to get the sound from the machine via the optical output. Audioboxer may have more info on this as I've never had to do it at all.

PS2 games can only currently be played on the original spec machines as mentioned in the first part of my reply.

Depending on what you plan to do with the machine it's all relative. I store movies on mine so upgraded the drive to a 320gig one, you can pick them up for about ?35-40 now. Also if you end up getting PlayTV that can also use up your hard drive space.

In terms of gaming some games come with quite hefty installs like MGS4 I believe is about 4gig. However newer games like Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain have none. But with patches etc I would look at a 60 or 80 gig model. But don;t pay too much given that you can easily upgrade the drive yourself for not a lot of money.

Meh, ill probably just stream movies from my PC to it. Actually, i wont even need it for that, my PC and this PS3 will probably be around 1 metre from each other haha xD

As for what you said about installing .. does that mean i wont have to use the disc every time?

You will always need to use discs on retail games, only those bought from the PlayStation store can boot from the hard drive. The installs are there due to the slower nature of the read speed on the bluray drive and to assist with the loading of certain segments of the game.

What kind of broadband connection do you need for online play? Probably a minimum of 1Mb, but at least 2Mb is recommended, especially for downloading demos, game updates etc

How can i play PS2 games on the PS3? You can't unless you get a relatively old unit which includes backwards compatibility.

I've had a 60GB hard drive since launch. I pretty much only use my PS3 for games and some streaming from time to time, so that 60GB is enough for me. If you want to download/store music/videos etc then it probably won't be enough.

Meh, ill need it mainly for gaming and the blu-ray to be honest.

Other game recommendations:

Burnout Paradise (get the complete edition off PSN...so cheap for a ridiculous amount of gaming, and only available at this price on PS3!)

Super Stardust HD (PSN)

COD: MW2

FIFA 10

MGS4

GTA4

MGS4 is one 40 hour cut scene btw. It looks good, but playtime your not getting much.

Lol...well yes it is a lot of "watching". But there is plenty of playtime...and really, it's just an amazing game both graphically and gameplay-wise.

Personally, I prefer it to GTA4. I just got bored with that because the missions feel repetitive (find guy -> try to kill guy -> guy runs away -> chase guy -> kill other guys protecting THE guy -> kill guy -> repeat for next mission). MGS4 is more a spectacle/achievement for games in my opinion.

    • I don’t get why if I bought the game on the last get I needed to pay $40 to upgrade to the new version in the first place and people who love the game and play a lot would have upgraded already so this is just PR and a chance to grab new players who forgot the game long time ago I think
    • The term "use" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that headline. "Use" can mean opening ChatGPT occasionally to ask for the definition of a word or information about a specific topic. If you frame the question around how many people use it as a daily driver in their work or personal lives, that number is a lot smaller. Those are the people who pay for AI. Nearly everyone else is happy to use it for free, but doesn't see enough value in it to pay for it.
    • No support for Windows Hello!
    • I think you meant the "ntfs3" driver, but yes there have been a lot of fixes for it in this release and previous releases, not 100% sure if the issue you mentioned is fixed though. In any case, the new "ntfs" driver in 7.1 doesn't have that issue (at least, no reports of such have come thru), but your kernel needs to explicitly enable support for the new driver first (like how CachyOS kernel has it), and you need to edit your mount points in /etc/fstab to use "ntfs" instead of the other drivers.
    • Epic Games says Unreal Engine 6 will help developers "build content faster" using AI models by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Epic Games is rolling out the latest major update to Unreal Engine 5 today, and at the same time, the company also dropped some information on the next-generation version of the product, Unreal Engine 6. This was already revealed a few weeks ago alongside the new Rocket League upgrade reveal. The company says it is combining the features of Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite to create this new version of its popular media creation tool. On top of creating entire games, the new engine will also focus on letting developers operate large-scale live service titles more easily, whether by shipping content into their own ecosystems or into Fortnite. The use of large language models is also mentioned here, with Epic saying it will be a core part of the engine. "We see LLMs, generative AI models, and tools like Claude and Codex playing a central role in helping you build content faster while maintaining the creative control you need," adds the company. Here is the rundown of what's new about version 6 of Unreal Engine: With all these changes to the programming model, portability upgrades, and generative AI integration, Epic says the new version of the engine will "change a lot about how games are made." The company aims to ship Unreal Engine 6 into early access in late 2027, with a full release planned for 12-18 months later. Epic Games also dropped a lengthy blog post about the new Unreal Engine 5.8 update for game developers over here. The release is focused on delivering better performance, customization, and streamlined workflows for development teams. This will be the final major update for this version of the engine before Epic switches to focus fully on Unreal Engine 6's early access launch.
