Why do people call their PC's rigs?

I've never understood why some people call their computers rigs. Do they drill for oil? Is this just another internet word that people now use because it sounds cool?

Also where did the annoying words players use in online gaming come from? i.e. owned, n00b, pwned, haxor, boon, lmao etc... When I play online gaming like battlefield 2 / 2142 it always seems like the other players are a bunch of stupid kids. Can't people talk proper english anymore on online games? I should really get a headset so I can call players idiots when they start bunny hopping around like a fool.

Maybe I will start calling my pc Murtaugh & my laptop Riggs. Because one is older than the other.

I think it's a bit like this...

We build PCs, and that IS geeky (though geeky is now supposedly seen as kinda cool in a "subculture" way)... Not wanting to appear geeky, they get called "rigs" cos drilling for oil or driving a truck is a manly thing to do.

It's just another form of made-up language from childhood. As you get older, the fad will fade and you'll finally remember what you've learned in school. Kids will be kids. Oh, and calling them "idiots" and bitching about their language probably won't motivate them to change it. ;)

and also different trucks, or amateur radio sets, things in which it is likely you have 'rigged together' something, or at least you need to be hands-on to use them

so a computer which is likely to be built by yourself , or a shop-bought one which appears that way, would also be called a 'rig'

Don't worry, I have no plans to get a headset...I just play and mostly ignore the silly players. I've never felt the need to use such stupid words while playing games anyway, the most I'd say is LOL or haha. Because most of the time the dumb things some of these players do is just too funny to ignore.

@ the other posts, thanks for the insight into the origins of the word "rig". I shall still keep calling my pc a pc though. I guess I'm just not geeky enough.

yeah never underestimate it, until it gets wet... or you make the mistake of using it for HVAC (duct tape was never intended for duct work, it sucks at high pressure air flow)

Couple years back I built a computer literally out of old spare parts. I referred to it as a rig, and when I got rid of that computer the name just kinda stuck.

i call my PC a box. its not anywhere near being a rig
