Battlestar Galactica' multi-player online game coming

Based on the ended science-fiction show, it is being introduced at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week and is expected to premiere in the fall.

"Battlestar Galactica" is finding new life on the Web.

A year after the cult and critics' favorite science-fiction show left the air, a multi-player online game is being developed that further explores the "Battlestar" universe, which is also continuing in Syfy's "Caprica" television show. The game, which will be introduced at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week, is set to be released worldwide in August or September.

Despite the crossover between the science-fiction and video game audiences, there has never been a major video game based on "Battlestar Galactica." In 2007 there was a poorly received downloadable starship fighting game with the name but little direct connection to the series.

"We're picking a point in the chronology of the series that fans are very familiar with to tell new stories," explained Bill Kispert, vice president of digital platforms for the partnerships and licensing department of Universal Pictures, which owns the "Battlestar Galactica" rights and made the game deal. "There will be space combat as well as missions and exploration."

Unlike traditional online multi-player games such as World of Warcraft that ship on discs and cost $50 to buy plus $15 per month, Battlestar Galactica is part of a new wave of games playable entirely in a Web browser for free.

In such games, which are hugely popular in South Korea and China and growing fast in the West, players can choose to purchase additional items such as weapons, costumes and access to new levels.

The Battlestar Galactica game is being published by Bigpoint, in which Syfy parent company NBC Universal is co-owner of a majority stake.

"With a browser game, you just get started when you launch," said Nils-Holger Henning, chief communications officer of Bigpoint. "We can constantly add features and content for people who are playing."

Holy cow!! I seen this and thought of Rappy :) Can we get him to play an MMO?

Like I said on Digg:

This was done using the Unity3D Engine, the engine they're using to make this.

Let that speak before you decide the fate of the game.

I for one, LOVE Caprica, and BSG the TV series, but .. this seems a little absurd, and like an attempt to milk the fraking cash cow.

no

seriously though if this looks badass then yeah I would give it a whirl but what minifig has posted hasn't quenched my thirst :pinch:

    • Free Software Foundation Europe pushes EU to force Google to allow AI uninstalls on Android by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels Users should be able to fully uninstall AI-based features from Android devices and be able to access interoperability functions, free from Google’s verification requirements, the European Commission has heard as part of an Android interoperability consultation under the Digital Markets Act. These measures were proposed by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) last week when it submitted its documentation. The FSFE noted that Google had started silently installing AI models without telling users. It noted that the EU’s DMA requires companies like Google to allow users to uninstall pre-loaded software from their devices, but in the case of the AI models Google is installing, they reinstall if you delete them, contravening the DMA. To get Google back under control, the FSFE has told the European Commission that there needs to be improvements within the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). First, it said that users should be able to fully remove pre-loaded AI components from their devices, with companies being prohibited from silently reinstalling or reactivating them. Second, access to Android interoperability features should not be contingent on registration, authorization, or contractual relationships with Google. This pertains to Google’s attempt to force developers to register with Google, even to publish apps to alternative app stores like F-Droid. Discussing its submission, Lucas Lasota, FSFE Legal Programme Manager, said: Google is planning to roll out its Android Developer Certification in September 2026. This will force every Android app developer to register with Google before their software can be installed on certified Android devices, but it should affect those who have removed Google Apps from their device. The program is controversial because it entails the signing of contracts and payment of account fees to Google, as well as the handing over of the identities of developers. It said: The FSFE said that if the Commission’s draft measures remain unchanged, then Google will be allowed to make developers verify their identity. The FSFE believes that asking developers to register is contrary to the text and spirit of the law. In summary, the FSFE has told the Commission that no developer should need a Google account, a Play Store presence, or any agreement with Google to access Android’s interoperability features.
