Cannot connect 5.1 to TV

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have a problem here since I'm new to home theatre thing. I have a Samsung LCD TV and an LG dvd player which supports 5.1. It works well while playing a DVD, but I just cannot get my usual TV to work with the external speakers. The TV has the option to use them and DVD player manual says it can be setup like that and I do that. But whatever I do, there is no sound. I am connecting audio out from TV to audio in to dvd player.

is the cable correct? where should i connect it?

thanks in advance.

The cable you show is a 2 channel stereo cable. You need an HDMI cable to carry 5.1 audio.

And the tv is not capable of outputting a 5.1 signal.

If you want to export audio from the tv to the dvd player, it will only be 2 channel audio, and the cable in your picture will do the job. Your dvd player appears to have audio inputs on it. Use them. And forget about selecting external speakers on the tv. It's not needed.

You simply need to tell the dvd player which audio inputs to use. It won't be true 5.1, but it will still sound great.

Well, I used the cables but couldn't get to work. It was a home theatre box yes, but just couldn't fully utilize it.

I connected hdmi(it was default), audio cables etc.

I connected a scart cable and now 2 speakers work, now i am trying to find an option where i can use all 5, i know TV doesn't support but i think the dvd player can somehow do that like matrix mode on logitech 5.1s

It's a simple matter of having all your audio sources running into the home theater box, each on their own set of inputs. From there, you select which inputs to use from within the player's menus.

It's how I've got my stuff connected and it all works fine. I've even got a divx player thrown into the mix.

What's up with the LAN port on your tv? Does it have a built-in divx player or what?

The cables somehow do not work. Now, I'll try optical input port when I get to chance to get 5.1. I connect every single input-output but something is wrong.

For the LAN port, yeah it has some kind of player, my PC acts like a media server and i can play my files from the tv, also it has widgets from flickr, twitter, weather, news etc. pretty useful.
