Got a PS3. Now just have a few questions!

Recommended Posts

Got me a PS3 on Saturday. I've owned 2 xboxes in my time but never made the Sony leap.

I just have a few questions about my new console.

I got it with Littlebigplanet, Assassins Creed 2, Ghostbusters and Bioshock 2.

My first reaction when trying to play them, after coming from an xbox, was just how long it took before I could play them. They have to install, there is no optional install it seems to be mandatory on some games so that's a 10 minute wait before I can even start up. Not a big problem I guess, but I plan on renting my games and my poor 40gb HD is going to take a beating.

But perhaps my most important issue is framerate. Unless my Ps3 is faulty but I seem to be getting lots of framerate issues. In bioshock 2, I feel like the PS3 is just struggling to run it. Ghostbusters is where I really notice it though. It just seems to be straining most of the time and its noticeable. In fact my PC runs both those games alot faster.

Assassins Creed 2 is better, but when I bring up the map there is a noticeable lag.

I guess what I'm asking is, is this performance normal? Or have I got a defective unit?

I think to be blunt, the PS3 is too complex for most developers so they focus their attention on the Xbox 360 (and PC) versions.

So try going for exclusive or first-party titles, otherwise you will see some jerky frame rates and stuff.

Ghostbusters was certainly one of the sloppy ports that hit the PS3 lower resolution etc etc got a total slating. Not heard anything about Bioshock 2 though so that surprises me.

As mentioned try picking up some exclusives if you really want to see what the machine can do. Although there really is little reason for sloppy ports anyways.

A lot of cross platform titles have an install on the hard disk for the PS3.

Its fairly rare for First party titles to have an install, those that do have a small install footprint. Final Fantasy 13 is another good example of game that does not install, but has quick load times.

I guess it all comes down to the developer.

Basically it comes down to what others have said so far, poorly optimized ports.

Uncharted 2 for example, which is a PS3 exclusive, runs beautifully for me all of the time and is a very enjoyable game.

Assassins Creed 2 runs exactly the same on the PS3 as it does on the 360 - the map 'lags' in both.

Bioshock 2 runs perfectly fine on my PS3, same as on the 360.

This was my understanding as well, that both of these games ran fine.

Honestly I have not really heard about frame rate being a widespread issue on PS3 games in a good 6 months.

Also to the OP, check in Bioshock 2 menu settings, there is something about locking the frame rate in and not locking it in, and see if that helps performance with it at all.

Ghostbusters now that is another story, that is a well publicized travesty on the PS3.

They need to install because Blu-Ray is slow read compared to DVD.

It's not hideously slow. At 2x speed (the PS3) Blu-ray is read constantly at 9MBps. At 12x speed (the 360) DVD averages 11MBps with a single layer and 8MBps with a dual layer.

Good of you to point that out. Most people just see the #x and assume that number alone tells the whole story.

Thanks for the info. I thought I was going mad. I guess ill try to swap in Ghostbusters for another title. Even if the framerate issue wasn't there, I find the game too boring to be honest.

Apart from Uncharted 2, can anyone recommend any other really good titles exclusive to PS3?

PS3 has many excellent exclusives, there's more to it than just Uncharted or MGS4 (which 9 out of 10 people you ask here will answer with :p). "Really good" is subjective so yea...

    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2 to finally get one of the most requested features by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft officially confirmed Windows 11 version 26H2 with the latest build, 26300.8697, for testing in the experimental Insider channel. The company also published more details about it mainly directed towards IT admins and system admins. Essentially version 26H2 will be delivered via an enablement package (eKB) over Windows 11 25H2. If you are wondering about some of the upcoming features in the next Windows version, one of them is certainly very interesting as Microsoft has confirmed it is finally bringing one of the most overwhelmingly requested features ever. March Rogers, the Partner Director of Design at Microsoft, recently highlighted some of the Search improvements that the company is testing, and during the interaction with users on X where he posted it, Rogers also confirmed that the company is working on disabling web search results inside Search. This is something which many users find quite annoying as Windows would often serve them links to Bing which it feels could be more helpful rather than bringing up the actual object or app the user may be searching for on their PC. Finally though the company is prioritizing local file search over the web. However the feature could not be disabled for many users as not all new features are immediately rolled out to everyone. Image via phantomofearth (X) Windows enthusiast phantomofearth who likes to dig deep into new builds uncovered the IDs you will need to enable these features. Using the following feature IDs the new Search-related features landing in Windows 11 26H2 can be used. Follow the steps below to enable the new Search experience on Windows 11 build 26300.8697: Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder. Press Win + X and select Terminal (Admin). Switch Windows Terminal to the Command Prompt profile with the Ctrl + Shift + 2 shortcut or by clicking the arrow-down button at the top of the window. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id: and press Enter. Restart your computer. If you change your mind and want to restore, repeat the steps above and replace /enable with /disable in the commands on steps 5 and 6. Delightedly and perhaps also expectedly, once you disable web search and other such bloat, the Windows 11 Search is said to get snappier as remarked by another Windows enthusiast Xeno.
